AC Compressor or belt noise

My '94 SLS with the NS seems to make lots of noise from the AC compressor cycling on/off. Also, I can hear the fan belt making some noise too. The car has only 93k miles and has not had the 100k service. My mechanic checked the belts and they're fine, no dry rot. Do these compressors make noise? I've only had this car a month. Thanks.

The AC Clutch baring could be worn and making the noise. If so, fix it as soon as possible or bypass the AC compressor with a shorter belt, such as ACDelco 6K739 or CarQuest No. K060739. If the clutch seizes it can ruin the compressor. If you pour some water on the compressor hub and it beads off, this is an indication that the baring is defective and heating up the compressor hub. It can be hard to isolate noises. It may be that a pulley needs to be greased, the alternator, etc. But, again, if you suspect the AC clutch baring, take care of it A.S.A.P. Fix it or buy a belt to bypass the AC until you can fix it.

I had this problem and bypassed the AC compressor. The hub bearing is inexpensive, about $23.00 at a Cadillac dealer. The entire hub with bearing is about $110.00. If you just want to replace the bearing, you will have to take the hub to a machine shop and have the old bearing pressed out and new one pressed in. You also need a hub puller tool.

There is quite a bit on this topic in the archives.

MAC is correct here is a photo of what happens if you let it go one too long. Not only that, the clutch coil gets overheated and shorts out, and blows the fuse that controls the AC clutch AND cooling fans my first notice was 260 degrees on my temp guage!

Use the belt MAC mentioned to eliminate the compressor from the circuit, and you can replace the hub/bearing assembly. You will be amazed how quiet the engine is once you eliminate the compressor noise. You may also have a bad idler wheel or tensioner, and you can check them when you eliminate the compressor with the short belt... Mike

I had the same problem even after the bearing was replaced. I put a shorter belt on and it got rid of the noise. Now just gotta get it replaced before summer.

Ken it sounds like its internal to the compressor and it was not the hub, what do you think? Mike
