Put a new radio in my 08 CTS now it won't start

What?....used factory radio? It is on a network and needs to have the VIN programmed in. That said...haven't heard of it causing a no start. Did you try putting the old radio back in?

GM does have a bulletin about modules...

GM Technical service bulletin TSB Class 2 trouble code B1000, B1001, B1271, B1780

Class 2 Serial Data Communication allows control modules (i.e. the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), the Body Control Module (BCM), the Dash Integration Module (DIM), the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC), the radio, the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Controller, and the Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) to exchange information. This information may be operational information or identification information. Among the identification information exchanged and compared within these modules is the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Typically the one module, the master module, broadcasts the VIN and all the other modules compare the VIN stored within itself. When the broadcast VIN does not match the VIN stored within the SDM, the following actions occur:

    •  DTC B1001 Option Configuration Error is set and deployment of the airbags is inhibited.
    •  DTC B1271 or a DTC B1780 Theft Locked.
The VIN information is also used by the radio. When the VIN does not match the VIN stored within the radio, DTC B1271 or DTC B1780 is set and the radio is inoperative.

Additionally, the master module will compare the SDM's part number (last four digits) to determine if the correct SDM is installed in the vehicle. If the SDM is the wrong part, a B1001 will also set.

This situation may occur when a vehicle is being repaired. When a PCM or a body control type module is replaced, the VIN information must be programmed into the replaced (new) control module. A module which has had VIN information entered into it (for example, one taken from another vehicle) cannot be reprogrammed. VIN information can only be entered into new modules. The ignition must be ON in order to program the control module. Since the VIN information is broadcast when the ignition goes to ON from any other ignition switch position, DTCs may be set in the SDM and/or the radio. Therefore, always follow the specified control module replacement procedures.

Yeah it is a used factory radio, the display says its locked which I was going to take to the dealership in the morning to get unlocked and programed.  Now it wont start.  The anti-theft light is on and now my battery is dead.  After this im done with newer cadillacs, its always something and you just cant work on them yourself anymore.  Its a shame

If radio fuse is removed and then reset anti-theft, maybe it will start.  Below is a procedure I found for resetting anti-theft:

30 minute GM relearn procedure:
1-Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
2-Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON (vehicle will not start).
3-Observe the SECURITY telltale(this is the security light), after approximately 10 minutes the telltale will turn OFF.
4-Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds .
5-Repeat steps 1 through 4 two more times for a total of 3 cycles/30 minutes (the vehicle is now ready to relearn the Passlock(TM) Sensor Data Code and/or passwords on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK). IMPORTANT: The vehicle learns the Passlock(TM) Sensor Data Code and/or password XXXXX the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle.
6-Start the engine (the vehicle has now learned the Passlock(TM) Sensor Data Code and/or password).

Just a question, did you leave the door open when you swapped the radio and did that work?   Is that why the battery is dead?   It is possible that the security light is flashing because the battery is very weak and an attempt was made to start it and the power was insufficient.

I hear your frustration but the radios are locked to reduce theft.  Imagine how many Nav units would be ripped out and just installed if there was no failsafe way to prevent that.   Just last month I was at the scrap yard looking for an upgraded radio for my daughters car and my friend behind the counter said, radios have become too much trouble as they are locked, they always are returned because the customer cant get them to work so we try to stay clear of them.   That is what you are experiencing.  It is true that these cars have become complex and an understanding of the systems and how they interact and having specialized equipment is imperative.  I read constantly about the systems but the 'network' system is still confusing to me.  Seeing random U or Network codes freaks me out and I want to learn more to understand why.   Its not your father's Cadillac!  :D

They are all connected on a loop....aka network...data bus...etc. Talking to each other...

Good examples:

The chime module is now the radio.

Vehicle speed is recorded by the air bag module in a accident.

More here...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_bus

Another good real world example....Our navigation unit in our 2012 Equinox is malfunctioning. I cannot just buy a used one and put it in. I can remove and ship off our unit and have it repaired for about $400....or I can have the dealer swap in a new (reman) unit for maybe $1000-1200 plus their maybe $400 diagnostic work and labor. The trick here is to fix the unit without losing the VIN # stored inside the unit.

I think the ultimate goal is to make the car uneconomical to fix...throw it away....too costly to fix. Just buy another new one. That and you really don't want a 500 pound wire harness in the car.

Please don't jump it.  Take the battery out, get it tested and charge it up OUTSIDE the car, charging a dead battery with your alternator will put a big strain on your alternator and potentially damage it.   I am a firm believer NOT to jump any one or to get jumped with all of the electronics.

That is quite an admission coming from you Logan given your experience and a little discouraging.  I am not sure what you mean by this "That and you really don't want a 500 pound wire harness in the car".

With so much electronics on the cars now...without networking....the wire harness for the car would literally be 500 pounds.

Took the battery out and had it charged and checked, turns out now the battery is bad.  Brought it home and hooked it up now that it was charged and car started.  Drove it straight to the dealership!

That is what I thought, and it probably was the cause of the security light.  Its not likely this is the original battery in an 08, if it is its amazing.  Let us know how it goes.

Honestly it might be the original battery, i bought it from an older couple with only 32,000 miles on it.  Only had the darn thing for 3 months!  Hopefully a new battery and programing the radio and im back up and running.  Evertime i try to save myself a little money by doing what i can myself it usually costs me more in the long run

Then that battery is close to 8 years old.

It never costs more to do it yourself.

Let us know how it turns out.

Well now the dealership is telling that the only way to unlock and program the radio is to send it to GM to have the old vin and serial numbers removed and mine put in.  Not real happy cause i asked them about unlocking and programing a used raido before i bought it and they made it seem like its a simple procedure.  Said they just had to plug it up to their computer.  Waiting to hear back from GM to see what its going to cost me.  Unreal

Not really sure what they mean by 'send it to GM'.

What they may mean is send it to a Delco radio / speedometer repair facility. Try checking Google or your yellow pages for speedometer repair in your area.

Take a look at this page, some of the radios shown are from Cadillacs

Unbelievable, now they say there's nothing they can do with the radio.  They said they've tried for 3 hours to erase the old vin and serial #s and they won't erase from the unit.  I don't know if they don't know what they're doing or if the unit is damaged.  They said they've done this many times before without any issues so not sure whats the problem with this one.

From the bulletin above....

"A module which has had VIN information entered into it (for example, one taken from another vehicle) cannot be reprogrammed."

That is from a GM service bulletin intended for GM dealers. In other words....you can no longer grab a part off another car on the lot to test. Must be true a GM Tech 2 cannot reset the VIN.

Now I understand my scrapyard distancing themselves from radios.  It sure did stop theft all right

I'm not sure what the problem is with the original radio but here is a link to a short discussion about the 2008 CTS radio and one possible fix.  It seems the best way to deal with this situation is to fix the radio.

Quote

Bose SiriusXH radio no sound 2008 CTS Cadillac. The system lights up on 2008 Cadillac CTS

If I turn the car off and wait for @4 t0 5 minutes, and restart the engine every thing is fine. this will happen about twice a week I get a little static and the radio stops. When the radio stop the OnStar will not work nor will the door chimes. I have had this car for 18months this problem is only just began for about a month. Its a Bose system. Everything work great after I restart the car engine,

Asked by for the 2008 Cadillac CTS
Condition
Some customers may comment on the following concerns during a key cycle. The audio returns after the vehicle is turned off for several minutes (10 minutes or more). This allows the amplifier to shut down completely and reset.

•No audio from the radio.
•Door ajar chime inoperative.
•Turn signal click clack sound inoperative.

Cause
These conditions may be caused by a software anomaly.
Reprogram the audio amplifier with the latest software available on TIS2WEB.
Do not replace the audio amplifier or radio for these conditions.

Good luck

@Logan  I was just reading up on networks and thought of you when I read this paragraph

Networks have also come to automobiles. Among the popular standards are J1850 and CAN, with the latter gradually replacing the former. Interprocessor networks are designed to cut down the long, tangled, complicated, expensive, and heavy wiring harnesses that permeate cars today. (you were right on the weight aspect! :hatsoff:)

My way of these newer vehicle modules is New or nothing. New part will learn vin. Used cannot relearn. Some may, most wont. Just waste your money over and over again by dealers and techs that think they can do it.

And just because it did it doesnt mean it will work properly.

Same thing with school buses. Everything is on a Datalink. Datalink goes down, bus goes down

GM FAN FOREVER

Nice, clean, luxury= fine automobile
