Backfire

Hi  all. Car is my 97 Seville.

Sometimes when I go to start the car it fires quick and stalls. Basically as soon as I turn to crank it fires but wont catch and stay running.

Then it seems to take a little excessive cranking to get it to start normally. It has happened a few times.

Well this morning it fired right up. 5 hours later I drove it again. Fired right up. 2.5 hours  later I went to start it and it instantly backfired and did not run.

Then a little extended cranking and  back to normal. 6 hours later fired right up.

Now I did not like the backfire. It left a smell after it happened. It was from under the hood. I have yet to open the hood to look at anything but hope all is ok.

I might mention I have never had a Northstar backfire and I have had several. I wonder if it may be that the FPR is failing. My fuel economy has not dropped. I still get 21.5 mpg average. Does this sound like a FPR issue? I wont be able to check it out til saturday at least but planned to drive it tomorrow.

Am I on the right track? thank all.

Cant believe  I forgot to mention, no codes

We are getting a sudden run on backfires.  As you know its easy to check the FPR, if fuel is present its bad.  I usually pull the vacuum hose start the engine and rev the engine a few times with a white piece of paper in front of the nipple.

If that is good maybe you have a leaky injector.  Pull the fuel rail up and support it, leave the fuel feed and return connected and pressurize the fuel rail by turning the key to on not run.  Watch for dripping from any of the injectors.

Yep, i second bbf.  I was told i had a "leaky injector" when still covered under warranty. They ran an injector cleaner through, and it fixed it.  Now, i alternate between techron, and marvel mystery oil.  I do not think any of my cars run with just gasoline in the tanks. I get the 6 pack of techron in Costco in sale for $12.99 and Walmart has the best prices on mmo.

So  I checked under the hood today and noted a thin white layer on the black insulator on the hood.

Will have to pull beauty cover and check it also.

No damage though. The white stuff wiped right off. Thank god I have no leaks

so I pulled the beauty cover off and the foam is burnt. Started up and pulled vacuum line off regulator. Left off for a good minute or so and nothing came out.

So it looks like one of the injectors must have leaked for some reason. I guess I will drive it and hope for the best. I will run some techron through it but it should not need it. I run techron every few months.

Over the winter I will pull the rail up and change the orings, pull the egr and clean it(if it needs it).

But if it is intermittent I may not be able to figure out which one it is/was
