Ahh, a fellow Star Trek lover.  My former name here was Scotty, and posts still exist!  Going to a Star Trek event with my daughter in NYC this weekend.

Heading to DragonCon in Atlanta tomorrow (Thursday through Monday) to hang out with 70K+ of my closest friends.  Shatner and  few others are going to be there.  Sir Patrick Stewart has been our favorite panelist for the past couple years.  Of course, hoping Jeri Ryan is back again...

Kate Mulgrew was a great panelist too, if you get a chance to speak, give a shout-out from DragonCon, we'll miss her.  She is also great in Orange is the New black.  Jealous of you meeting Picardo and Dawson.

I figured the only thing it could really be was the throttle body. Glad you figured it out. Keep us posted

Throttle bodies should be a dime-a-dozen at any junkyard.  There's bound to be a car with a bad engine due to headgasket failure that would have a good throttle body.

Hello everyone I am having a very similar problem but in my case I believe that my FPR was leaking into the intake through the vacume hose , I've replace the FPR now and need to air out and clean my now wet intake manifold .  I've never done this my self but I'm very optimistic and would just like a few pointers if anyone has them on removing and reinstalling my intake manifold and new victor reinz gasket set I will be putting it back together with :)

If you have water in the intake manifold, it isn't from the FPR.  The FPR leaks gas through the vacuum hose when the diaphragm in it gets a crack.  The gas will not hurt anything unless you have YUGE amounts of gas; if so, sop it up with shop rags (with appropriate fire safety measures, of course).  You don't really need to pull the manifold unless there is the aforementioned YUGE amounts of gas there.

If gas (or water) is puddling in the intake manifold, you might consider the possibility of hydrolock.  If there is any danger of that, or if the engine won't turn over easily and quickly when you go to start it, pull the plugs and spin the engine to get any liquid gas out of the cylinders.

Who said you needed to air it out?  Was it spitting fuel or blowing fuel.

Iv replaced a bunch and usually they spit fuel, replace it and you are good to go

Jim there I enough fuel puddled that wen I remove the throttle body it's clearly visible , and do you mean to pull the plugs or wires and how would I "spin" the engine , I apologize for my lack of knowledge I'm just getting into working on my own cars but again I am confident

Fisher yes sir when I would remove the vacume line fuel would spit out constantly  I have since replaced the FPR and no more leaking , the plug at the end of the intake manifold did however blow out the orange gasket which is why I ordered a whole new set ?

OK, you are speaking about the anti-backfire valve behind the power steering pump?   That blew out?  That valve is there so the nylon 66 intake manifold doesn't explode spewing shrapnel upon backfire.

You were getting backfires?

If you take the intake off you will need plastic scrapers and brake clean  and rags to clean the intake mating surface on the heads.  DO NOT use scotchbrite pads.  DO NOT use sharp scrapers that can scrap the aluminum surface I recently saw where some idiot scratched the hell out of the head mating surfaces with sharp scrapers.  You will need a set of quick disconnect tools to remove the fuel line and return line from the fuel rail.  The lines will snap back into the fuel rail connections, don't forget to replace the retainers.

Lift the fuel rail gently a little at a time slowly pulling it up a little at a time moving around from side to side.  If you want to replace the injector 0-rings get them in advance.

Did you get a new o-ring for behind the throttle body?   I think the 97 is the same as the 96, once that o-ring comes out, it expands and won't go back in.

The intake is torqued to 89 INCH pounds, if I recall (NOT FOOT pounds haha).  Be careful when the intake ports are open in the heads while the intake is off that you DO NOT drop anything in there.  I usually cut rags and stuff the intake holes with rags.  Vacuum the area with a shop vac as you proceed and before you pull the rags out at the end.

Your FPR was leaking pretty badly to be backfiring.  Ill let others chime in but my gut is that you don't need to clean out the cylinders by spinning the engine with the plugs out given you were spitting from the FPR.  The inside of the intake always looks wet, EGR gases condense in there and it always looks wet and black gooey...

A tip, use a ball point pen to write on the little tabs on the spark plug wires 2, 4, 6 and 8 and just remove them from the front bank plugs and fold them back toward the firewall.  If you remove the EGR valve have a gasket ready to go back.

Hope this helps

Fisher thank you a million for all of the information you answered every question I had to come !! An yes after the car would sit a while I would get very violent backfires which is when I realized there was a orange gasket hanging from the anti backfire valve I preferred the victor reinz intake manifold gasket set and should have it ere by tomorrow although I haven't been able to get a clear answer on what all it will include . Also while removing the throttle body I didn't encounter anything other than a metal gasket is tht normal ?

Here is what you DO NOT want to do, someone scratched the surfaces scraping them

Regarding the TB gasket they may have changed it in 97, in 96 they used an O-ring that expanded upon removal and you needed to replace it as it would not fit, it sounds different and you are good.

DO NOT touch or attempt to clean the injector nozzles, you can lightly lube the injector O-rings with an O2 sensor safe silicone lube.  Gently place the injector tips in the holes being careful to line them up carefully when they are ALL lined up and slightly started, apply pressure to start sinking them little by litte working your way around little by little, you want to work the entire fuel rail down little by little, not one side at a time.  Use bright light.

I always take digital photos of everything to jog my memory if I forget or need guidance.

Don't forget the vacuum line that connects to the intake manifold nipple behind the power steering pump/pulley area - it is very easy to miss that on reassembly and you'll get a P0171/P0174 code.

I've been wondering what that line was for ?

If I am not mistaken, that vacuum line is used for hvac actuators and maybe the parking brake servo.

What blew out on the intake? please post a picture.

The blow out valve is a spring loaded plate on the back (behind power steering pump) of the intake. In the event of a backfire, etc... it should open and the spring should close it.

note the center of the intake. It is there. The one pictured is normal. Closed

If you were spewing fuel like that it was likely bad for a bit, possibly causing replacement of other items in attempt to solve a starting or related issue

In the picture of the intake that rockfangd posted, you can see the nipple I was referring to in my earlier post.  It is in the 9:00 position relative to the opening.  If that vacuum line is not connected, the A/C will blow out the defroster vent for sure.  The parking brake release may also be affected.  The power steering pulley will quickly mangle the vacuum line too.
