Brake Woes... Booster?

Overall braking that wasn't up to par led me to do a complete brake job.

When I started, the most visible problem was a heavy glaze on all 4 rotors.

Rotors have been turned and all pads replaced, along with rear calipers. System has been thoroughly bled.

Current problem is that pedal gradually bleeds down to the floor. No visible fluid leaks. So I say - ok, master cylinder. Not the first time I've seen one fail after flushing / bleeding an older system.

But tonight while messing with it, I noticed that when I start it and press on the brake, I hear pffft - sounds like it is coming from the booster area - every time I step on the brakes.

Is this a sign that the booster is going bad too? The only other time I had to replace a booster, it was just because power assist seemed to be absent. But no pffft.

Any thoughts?

How did you bleed it? Did you use a vacuum pump like a Mighty Vac or the old DOWN/UP method? Could you have air trapped in the system from the ABS that you did not get out yet?

Early on sailors navigated by the stars at night and the North star became the symbol for finding ones way home. Once you know where the Northstar is you can point your ship in the right direction to get home. So the star became a symbol for finding ones way home or more symbolically even finding ones path in life.

I used the old pump method. I've run about 2 quarts of fluid through it. Very confident that the problem is not trapped air.

I've used a hand vacuum pump on the bleeder valves in the past, but always seem to get better results by pushing the fluid through rather than sucking it through.

I may start by replacing the master cylinder and see where that leaves me.

Thanks for the input.

  • 3 weeks later...

Replacing the master cylinder did fix the problem with the pedal bleeding down.

The overall braking was actually much better after I turned all the rotors and replaced the pads - before I noticed the m/c going bad. I think the heavy glaze I had on the rotors was the biggest problem and that the master cylinder was an incidental problem that came to a head after the "rinsing" it got during all of the bleeding / flushing.

I haven't messed with the booster and it seems to be fine.
