Another Allante Top Question -- Won't go all the way down

Recommended Posts

Hello, all!

Looking to leverage to collective wisdom of the group. After many decades of being an admirer, I finally bought an Allante. But for the life of me, I cannot get the darn top to seat fully in the well. I followed the instructions as posted in a previous thread (see below), and while helpful, I'm still getting hung up when top is about 3/4 of the way down.

Nearest I can tell, 1989 quarter windows fold inward without the need to "release" them (ala the old release lever). Any advise would be greatly appreciate.

Welcome to Caddyinfo.

I hope a guru will be able to help you. You probably have something binding somewhere toward the back. Does it seem like it is one side or the whole thing?

See if there is any obstructions down in the pocket where it goes when down. Would be funny if there was something there.

Is the top electric? If so check the rams that make it go up and down to make sure neither is broken or damaged.

I dont have the greatest  expertise with tops but more than happy to help. It is best to actually see it to get a better idea.

I had saved this site a few years ago, you might send them a question regarding the problem you are having, I am sure that they will have a solution.  I had a friend who used them on a 91.  Let us know the outcome

This is from their web site:

Please note that there were some problems associated with the original design of the top's frame system. GM issued several technical service bulletins in this regard. These should still be available from your Cadillac dealer. They include bulletins with the following numbers: T-88-27, T-88-64, T-88-65, T-90-40, T-90-43, T-92-43. These bulletins delineate problems ranging from weatherstrips to frame rattling. Our tops are manufactured in accordance with original specifications and cannot be expected to overcome inherent design difficulties inn the frame which have not been corrected or noted. It would be wise to exercise caution whenever this top is raised or lowered and to "baby it" into position.
