franey
Judging on the age of your car , i would bet on one of the bearings that the main belt runs on, possibly idler pully , or one of the stationary b earing pullies.
cadillac_caddy_sts
My car does the same thing it is very irretatating what do you guys think I should replace first to try and stop this? Is there a way to oil it or something? Defending Northstar perf a qtr mile at a time!!!!
Phillip
If the squeal only happens when it is cold or the steering is under load, it may just be a worn belt. That used to be pretty common but doesn't happen so much with serpentine belts and tensioning idlers. If you want to check the belt, you can always put a little soap on it to see if it stops sqealing. If it does, replace the belt. If not you probably have a bearing going bad. It is most likely the tensioner but it may also be the generator/alternator, power steering pump and so on.
cadillac_caddy_sts
Well its on the left side and it only does it when its cold start so what does a new belt coast to get put on? It doesn't look like an easy job!!! Like everthing else on this car it has to be complicated lol!! Defending Northstar perf a qtr mile at a time!!!! STYES
Guru is right but consider the following. Noisy belts from a NS and it's pulley systems is very common, and is not necessarily a problem. They are just noisy! The tensioner is the only thing that makes noise that you should look at. The alternator makes noise that is "normal" and so does the AC compressor. Especially the compressor, it is very noisy. The alternator will "warn" you forever before it gives out. A noise from the water pump may indicate the need to replace it, but that noise will come from the back of the engine instead. Even the water pump will give ample notice though. caddy_man2132
Geez guys, replacing the serpentine belt has to be one of the simplest things to do. If you think this one is hard then you never replaced "fan belts" on a system wtih 3 or 4 belts and associated pulleys.....LOL All you need to do to change it is to release the load on the belt by unloading the tensioner with a 1/2 drive breaker bar in the drive lug on the tensioner and slip the belt off the power steering pulley. Release the tensioner, wiggle the old belt out and slip the new one in. Put it on the power steering pulley last when you cock the tensioner again. Make yourself a "tool" ahead of time out of a 2 foot piece of scrap 3/8 tubing or some such material. Bend a 1 inch "L" on one end to use as a skinny hand to reach down into the area at the front of the engine to route the belt correctly. Simple. No need to pry on pulleys to tighten the belts and such. Just cock the tensioner and install the belt over the power steering last and let of the tensioner. While the belt is off spin the idler pulleys at the idler position and the belt tensioner position. Chances are the bearings are pretty dry and need dissassembly and greasing and/or replacement. You also want to check the power steering pump alignmend. Look at the lower edge of the power steering pump mount where it mates to the block. There is an alignment tab machined into the mounting bracket that must be flush with the front of the block. There should be no gap between the verticle surface of the block and the tab. If there is, loosen the one bolt holding the power steering pump bracket, push the pump rearward on the engine (toward the drivers side of the car) and retighten so that the alignment tab is flush against the front verticle surface of the block. Clean the pulleys before you put a new belt on as all that WD40, grease, soap, belt dressing and whatever you have been spraying on the belt drive will ruin the new belt also. bbobynski you seem to be a very educated person on these cars how is it that you know so much about them?? cadillac_caddy_sts
Its weird it seems that the squeek will go away when I do WOTs in my car! Than a week later if I have been taking it easy the squeek comes back! Why is this? Defending Northstar perf a qtr mile at a time!!!!
