It's been awhile since I've posted with a problem, but I'm back with a trouble code P0420. I was thinking on the bank1 02 sensor for a start. I've also notice I'm burning fuel like crazy and within 100 miles of driving P0420 pops back. I cleared the code, and it stays off for a while but return when it's hot I've noticed. I have 161K on 05 deville base, trying to decide where to start. BTW my scan tool says unsure if it would pass emission test. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Well, I notice that my code would come on when it was extremely hot but my all fluids were in specs of standards. After returning home, I jacked the car from the drivers side and pulled the 02 sensor bank 1, AC Delco and cleaned it but ended up replacing all 02's only to find that wasn't my fix. SES returned as soon as I idled at a light after the engine reached 160 degrees, so back to the garage. Called Jeff from XXXXXXX and was told to pull XXXXXXX and thought, why nobody answered my post. Was it because I didn't renew my support status for caddyinfo.com? I've help a few guys and posted how to rewire a complete 05 deville stereo system with bypassing the amp and still sounding good today with the factory radio in the trunk. Is this a money thing or what? Not helping a person because my payment for support didn't clear? I FIXED MY PROBLEM WITHOUT REPLACING MY CAT AND TO FIND OUT IT WASN'T THAT CAT WITH A CODE OF P0420. You may not post this after you read it, but someone needs a reality check. I'M NOT TELL YOU HOW I FIXED MY 05 DEVILLE. BYE ICECOLD !!!!!!!!! :sign0024::fighting0025:

Well, glad you got it fixed. I personally respond to posts based on whether I have something to contribute or not. CaddyInfo is not and never has been a 'pay for answers' site. I am sorry you felt slighted that you didn't get responses to your post on 8 June. Good luck with your Cadillac.

For someone looking another day for help with Code P0420 here is a site search of previous discussions

If I don't know the answer or have knowledge of the problem at hand, I don't post to a thread. Nothing is worse than a bunch of people who have no experience with the car in question posting a bunch of opinions...

I am sorry nobody here posted within a (timely) manner. I can assure you it has nothing to do with money.

I have been a member on this forum for a long time and it has been nothing but wonderful. Sometimes we dont have easy answers and dont want to give misleading information.

And you get people like me that although working 2 full jobs still find the time to try to post all of the info I can give to our new and to our loyal members equally, without getting payed for anything.

regarding your 0420 code. It specifically related to the Catalytic converter efficiency. Ie oil in it, too much fuel, contaminants, etc...

A sticking injector, fuel pressure regulator, and a number of other things including poor fuel quality being a big one can all cause a 420.

I hope that your code does not return. Sometimes we think we have figured it out but it shows up again. very well leading to replacement of the cat.

Best of luck to you. Feel free to share some pics and dont be a stranger

I never saw the post.  Usually P0420 relates to a bad or clogged cat and it needs replacing.  The clog or soot can be caused by running the engine rich with codes that cause the engine management system to operate in "open loop" instead of "closed loop" and the CAT will be damaged by excessive heat.  Some people have tried stuff you can pour into the tank that will clean the CAT.   Some say to use pure lacquer thinner, sea foam, etc.  This is something I would NEVER do:

To me, using those types of solvents risks damaging the windings on your fuel pump, solenoids and injectors and while you might clean your CAT you have shortened the live of your fuel pump/injectors.  Take a piece of coil winding wire and dip it in lacquer thinner and you will see that it removes the protective coating which will cause the coil to short out.

Why you would replace all the O2 sensors is beyond me given that you didnt have any O2 sensor codes, but as Eric notes many will replace O2 sensors in error.

As Eric noted a CAT can be damaged and cleaning it wouldn't matter.

And yes, any emissions codes or open loop conditions will cause you to fail a state emissions inspection.

A single search as Bruce provided above, provides a ton of information on the P0420 and even without any members responding, that simple search would have provided you with all the information you needed, and guess what?, you don't even need to be a supporting member to do a search, as is the case on some sites.

Membership status has nothing to do with whether or not we provide help.  Your reply above in CAPS  was quite rude. A simple search would have provided you with plenty of information, but you wouldnt get lacquer thinner, solvents or soap and water solutions here.  As rockfangd stated it will be interesting to see if it stays fixed.

OMG,

I was asleep at the keyboard too. :( I'm still in the Caddyinfo new format learning curve.

Doesn't sound like the poster was waiting for a response anyway.

One way to fix a problem is to throw as many parts at it as you can until it fixes the problem or you run out of money $..... Sounds like it was a shotgun fix.

I'm devastated that I may never know how many parts it took to fix it.

I enjoy your participation, so hopefully the update will rapidly become familiar.  Do you think videos would help for some daily task how-to?  I was reading about one forum that did that to help make it easier.

I don't think orig poster is even following this topic, so he may miss updates.

Bruce,

Videos would help a bunch!

I was confused by the following of a topic. I wasn't scrolling down far enough which probably was why I missed Icecolds post altogether. To me it appeared that only the first few were the ones I hadn't read yet.

I was using the "Activity" heading almost entirely. Is there a way to narrow it down to like a week of ones I haven't read or is it best to use a general search?

I think I'm getting better :bluesbrothers:

Red Oak how's the 93 caddy doing?

I will work on some illustrative videos.  I like to use Activity - All activity, perhaps also choosing condensed to the right.

this orders new to old so if you only want last week of info don't scroll back more than the last week lol.  You can choose all unread but that pulls in ebay and other inputs as well as problem posts.

I will keep thinking about (and trying) different update options.

I have discovered that I needed to mark all threads READ, that helps you see all new entries, but some topics that I dont want to see.  It has some nice features and I am beginning to come out of the woods with it.

I am sure there are terrific features any videos would be terrific!

Original post was prior to forum update.  It was posted in a model specific subforum not the main forum, and in the old forum some only checked main forum.  That is one nice part of new activity tab is it is across all forums.

The day of orig post I was on a late flight to LA and an online #motorama chat from the plane but orig poster is right should have replied.

Very well could be the reason.  There will be a gap of stuff I missed, but the starting point begins.

I need to find out how to ignore posts to say the 19th hole for an example.
