Bad Front Hub at 65k Miles - Normal?

My car was shimmying some in the front end, and the mechanic, who I trust, says that I need a new hub - that the old one has a flat spot.

Is this normal at 65k miles, or the result of abnormal wear, or striking something?

We have had this discussion here before and its definately possible for a hub bearing to be bad at your mileage.

Early on sailors navigated by the stars at night and the North star became the symbol for finding ones way home. Once you know where the Northstar is you can point your ship in the right direction to get home. So the star became a symbol for finding ones way home or more symbolically even finding ones path in life.

cool,

Ordinarily you will get codes if the bearing is bad. First warnings are usually "ABS" and "Traction Control" lights on the dash display. Not doubting your mechanic but if you don't have codes or dash warnings you need to look further as this is a costly fix. Although 65k is not abnormally low for the problem it usually doesn't show up until 85-100K. Sometimes never.

My son just had the replacement on his 98 Grand Prix. He had both the codes and "ABS" and "Traction Control" indications. Monro did it for $340.00 plus tax. My personal mechanic (much further away) would have done it for $300.00. On your car if Caddy dealer does it I'll guess $500.00, maybe more.

I'd try dynamic wheel balance first (maybe someplace else) to see if it cures. If the wheel is out, the balancing process will show that. JMHO.

Good luck

coolest,

The codes may show up or may not. Mine went south at 125 kmiles, no codes. Usually people suspect a bad hub bearing because of the specific growling noise it makes. Make some "S' zigzag maneuvers and pay attention to the change the noise makes. In 90% of cases if you notice say, noise increases when you turn right , it is your left hub is acting up. You will get tons of information regarding hub bearings and their repair. The part is some 100 plus and the labor some half an hour. and it is DIY job for one with minimum mechanical skills and some courage. Good luck!

adallak,

This is true. One of my sons' friends needed a new hub with no codes. In my sons' case the computer read that he was doing 4 mph while the car was in "park."

However, my son had no noise either. Go figure.

Correct. Fortunately, the part is not expensive and easily accessible. I would not take the car to a dealer for hub replacement.

The part is about $140 and its basically a 6 bolt operation, its a cake walk job to do! Since the shop gets the part for 50% of what you can buy it for, you can SEE how much gouging is being done.

If you are getting a roaring, rolling noise, that can be varied by alterating left and right with the steering wheel, the hub could be the trouble. YES, I had original hubs at 90,000 miles on my 91 Seville, but you asked if it was POSSIBLE...for the hub to be bad at your mileage, and I said YES it was, AND the roaring hub WON'T always cause a code ONLY a rolling roaring noise!! The key statement is that you trust your mechanic. The hub bearing has to be pretty bad for you to get a shimmy, to confirm that it is bad jack the wheel up off the ground grab it at 9 and 3 o'clock and try to move the wheel back and forth... Typically they ROAR long before they cause a shimmy...

I currently have a ROARING hub bearing on my 96 Deville with 62,000 miles on it and it has been bad for 10,000 miles...
