98 STS Problems

I just bought a used 1998 STS last month. I didnt get an extended warranty and of course, one week after the warranty ends, I'm having problems. First I have a major trunk leak I just discovered. But I think I read how to fix that on this site already. But also, my rear defog, power locks, rear seat warmers, cigarette lightres all sopped working. I was told I need a new Rear Integration module that will cost me450 bucks. Or they could reset it for 150. What should I do? Buy the new part. Could I somehow install that myself or is it too difficult. Should I just have it reset or am I going to have to replace it anyway. Also, My gas guage stopped working as well. It just sits on empty and the range just has a couple of dashes on the display. What is wrong with that. They told me it is not related. How does everything go wrong at once!!!!!!>?????!?!?!? Please help!!!!

Mtiedje, I had a similar problem, but it was my seats, gas door, locks and forgot the rest. It turned out to be a bad relay. I would lose the power to my accessories when I tried to adjust the seats for about two hours. Then the power would return to them if I didn't try to use any of the other items during this time period. I just wanted to share this info with you. I hope its not the big bucks repair. Good luck!

mtie,

I have a 98 STS also. I'd like to give you some advice.

Go to an independent mechanic that you know to be reputable. Have him put his computer on it and pull the codes. (Do not tell him what the dealer told you)

Find out what he has to say (I doubt on a reset you will be charged $150. As for the gas guage, you could have caused this malfunction by gasing your car up while the engine was running. If this is the case he will most likely reset that for nothing. Read your manual and be sure your car is off when refueling. The worse case scenario is the "sending" unit in the tank has gone bad.

As to your major problem, if there are no codes it is most likely a blown fuse or bad ground.

Just curious, did you buy the car from the dealer who gave you the diagnosis? Also what is the mileage? I'd also recommened getting a carfax report to see if it was in an accident.

Let us know how you make out.

If you have an owners manual go to the section on fuses. Look for the list of accessories on each fuse and relay, and you will probably find your problem. I would say one of your fuses is blown. If you find it and replace the fuse and it blows again then you have a short in one of the accessories you listed. Check your cigarette lighters and see if someone stuck a foil gum wrapper into one or something else, that will blow a fuse. To reset what they are saying probably means pulling your back seat or trunk liner out and pushing a reset button. I would run, not walk, away from those guys.
