What I don't understand and can't find an explanation to is, why in blazes does it start if it "sees" an invalid key code or no key present ( B2069 & B3055 respectively ) ??? couldn't I pound in a screwdriver and do the same thing?

I tried to send a PM to you but it said you couldn't receive any more messages - have you been naughty?

Ok I figured out my problem. My friend had 2 keys made at ACE Hardware about a year ago and they never worked. He was getting the 3 min wait time and then the no key messages.

He took his original plus those 2 keys to a locksmith the other day who said all 3 keys were 8 ohms.... and the locksmith said he needed to take the car to the dealer and have the ignition switch replaced.

In steps me, I measured his original 98 Eldorado key today at 9,540 ohms which fits perfectly into key number 14 in Jims chart above. But here is the surprise, both ACE Hardware keys showed ZERO resistance, zip nada... The kicker is what in the H did the locksmith measure to call them all 8 ohms?

I sent him to the dealer to either buy #14 blanks and either have them cut or take them someplace to have them cut.

I checked his 95 Eldo key and it measured 681 ohms or key #3 in the chart above.

I checked my 97 Eldorado and the key resistance was 1860 ohms which is key #7 on the above chart.

I hope this helps, if your are having a problem check the resistance of the original verses the copy.

Mike,

Where are you checking the ohm values at? At the key or at the connector?

My keys are the big black "round" headed keys, they have a transponder key/pellet that is "excited" ( turned on ) by the ignition exciter/reader it creates a magnetic field activating a small coil in the key that produces a "signal" that the reader looks at and transmits to the VTD module for verification. They don't have a resistance value that I know of unless it is in some algorithm in the VTD module.

Did your friend have a pelleted key? From the years of the vehicles you described I would think they would all be the same but maybe the STS was special as it has the key in the dash not in the column...

I guess 98 is where the Eldorado and Seville began to part ways. You have Passkey 3 and the 98 Eldorado has Passkey 2?

Yes, I checked the resistance at the key, it has a little resistance pellet in it.

From what I have been able to find, the STS is in "fuel enable" mode which means when the previous owner turned the key to start after replacing the battery ( sat for approx 6 mos with dead battery ), everything was fine and the vehicle started, very shortly after that ( seconds or mili-seconds ) it "failed" the subsequent "signal" test and illuminated the security light. It remains in this mode and only needs a mechanically correct key to start. The VTD has essentially been turned off. This explains the no light I had briefly after cleaning the G100 grounds. I think if I disconnect the battery for 20 mins or touch the terminals together after disconnecting them, then do a key relearn 30 min procedure, I can turn the VTD back on.

Sounds good in theory, I'll see what happens in the real world....

Its nice to have all of that relearn information and passkey/passlock info in one place. That came from Standard Motor Products, they used to have a line called BlueStreak maybe they still do. They are located near me, here in new york.

It is nice to have in one place :)

The locksmith the other day cut a key that was "door" key to verify the mechanical cut of the key. It is all metal no head, nothing, it starts the car!

Verifies the theory that the VTD is off and in fuel enable mode.

I think I installed a lot of Blue Streak point sets :) that was a long time ago. Is that the one you're thinking about?

Yes, Blue Streak was a Standard Motor parts premium brand. I installed many of those point sets myself! Still have 2 dwell meters that are sitting in the corner with with my 8-track player :-)

It looks like you are making progress on the security system. Ill return your PM shortly, working on a smartphone is frustrating, gotta set up the laptop.

What was terrific in that Standard link you posted above was this:

PASSKEY & PASSKEY 2

This system consists of: the

Powertrain Control Module (ECM or

PCM), Body Control Module (BCM) or

Passkey theft deterrent module, and

the ignition lock and key. In most

cases, the theft deterrent duties are

handled by a Passkey module. In

those vehicles, if you are replacing a

key, all you must do is match the

resistance of the existing key that is

in use.

I did the battery disconnect, transient drain and did some other stuff to the car while the battery was disconnected. Over 20 mins total. I connected the battery and inserted the key to do the relearn step one, when I turned the key to on the security light went out in about 6 seconds which I thought was strange but I wanted to complete the relearn so I went the full 30 mins plus and at each step the security light went out within 5-6 seconds. Started the vehicle at the end and the light stayed out, did the other key relearn and still the light repeated the 5-6 second out sequence. Started the vehicle a couple of time with each key and the security light came on steady at restart #4. I wasn't too surprised because of the abnormal security light response to the relearn.

Now, I'd like to say I performed an elaborate diagnostic sequence BUT I pulled the hush panel down removed the VTD module and opened the case.....

I will post pics as soon as someone tells me HOW

Ok. Go to photobucket.com and register an account. Upload your photos there. Click on a photo you want to link here. On the right you will see link image click that and it will be copied into your clipboard.

Then come here go to the insertion point and paste.

That is a better method because uploading photos here you will be limited to 100k I think.

So...the service manual was correct. Bad VTD module. Not always the case.

What is interesting is the GM parts source.

The New Mexico 'gmpartsdirect.co' seems to be a direct take on gmpartsdirect.com ....they are a well known online Chevrolet dealer in North Carolina.

I was looking for the source of the Passkey II resistance chart to answer BBF's question and didn't find it in the 1997 FSM. The file date for the JPG file is 5/19/2014, so it isn't one I generated (I would have used PNG or GIF for B/W text). I did a quick web search and turned up these two verifications of the target resistance values:

Note that the Lockmasters table gives the values in KOhms but doesn't make that clear. Neither table gives the tolerance range that Passkey II will accept.

I apparently got this table off the web to deal with a problem on Caddyinfo. If the ranges are important, I'll keep looking. As for now, I'll add the table to my Excel spreadsheet that begins with the OBD II codes, and is available for download through the link in my signature block.
