My new 1994 Cadillac Eldorado Touring Coupè Northstar (maybe)

Recommended Posts

This is it

I am really having problems finding information about this car

it is a front wheel drive 4.4 l v8 and 295 hp, I know this thanks to the italian ID

I have been told this is supercharged but in the internet I have not found any information (apart for the 400 hp version)

This car has 180.000 km (111.800 miles)

It looks NEW as you can see

It sounds GREAT

I have some question

- Does exist a supercharged version with 295 hp of the 4.4 northstar?

I'd like to know if the people i talked to are just ignorant (american cars in italy are very rare, because of the taxes and petrol price)

- If I wil have problems can I easily order spare parts?

I am sorry if my english is not so good!

The car is in very nice condition. I liked it when they used the stainless steel trim on the pedals.

It is a 4.6L engine, 295 HP. It is normally aspirated (not supercharged).

That car is beautiful ! There is a cadillac 4.4 supercharged. The first ones were in 06. They were in sts-v and xlr-v. I wonder if someone transplanted one in there. That would surely be a tremendous job. I would be more inclined to think its a 4.6 northstar which did have 295 hp in some versions, including eldorado I believe.

your english is better than some . No problems there

Nice car.

Would love to see one be supercharged but were not factory.

That is a gen1 northstar. Unless someone went nuts and did a ton of modifications to make something else work.

Welcome to Caddyinfo.

Post a underhood picture if you would

Is it just me or is that a different oe steering wheel? looks weird, like a foreign wheel

Also note the additional markers forward of the doors.

From the photo of the rear of the car, it does have the Northstar logo to the left under the trunk. From the front, it has the chrome grille, which is used with the base model and the ESC, which stands for Eldorado Sports Coupe. With the Northstar, the ESC has the Sport Performance Package, which includes the Sport Appearance Package, making it effectively the same as the ETC except for the chrome grille. The engine for this model is rated at 270 hp, and it has a final drive ratio of 3.11 (the ETC has a final drive ratio of 3.71). The 270 hp engine has a little more torque than the 295 hp engine, and the combination of that and the 3.11 final drive ratio makes the car a bit more pleasant to drive and has a noticeably better fuel economy than the 295 hp/2.71 combination.

For more details on your car, see this page:

As far as parts is concerned, Cadillac similar to yours were produced from 1993 through 2002 model years so there is no particular problem with parts for this car, but you do understand that the car is 23 years old, and some parts for any car that old will be difficult to find. The good news is that this car is a very reliable car, and properly taken care of, it should not need a lot of work. If you do have problems, post your symptoms here. We have a lot of people here that are experienced in troubleshooting and maintaining Cadillacs of all model years.

The most important thing that I would do with any used car is to change the coolant and check all the fluids, the brakes, and the tires.

From your excellent photos, this is a beautiful car. Thank you for taking the trouble to show us the photographs.

You have to go back and look closely.....car has rear export tail lamps with amber turn signals.

That is a factory STS style steering wheel with the thumb bumps. The non STS used a different wheel without the bumps.

Wow beautiful! Congratulations! Will post some info later. I have a 94 factory service manual if you need any info or help. Here is a good site for Cadillac History and you will find interesting info for yours.

The Northstar engine is a very special engine with unique design here is a site that will give you some background

Look at the cornering lamps also.

Thats weird that they would make them amber as they are not actually turn signals

That amber cornering lamp is a European requirement. Its the dead giveaway of an export version.

Thanks guys!

I am pretty sure this is a 4.4. The documents report a 4365 cm3 218 kw

I will return to make some other photos and a test drive

At this moment the owner is not in town and last time the car had a battery problem.

We actually turned it on but he was not sure to drive it.

A very useless question: how much may cost this car in america?

You can do a search at kbb.com for a used car value but in a private sale I found it was worth $1509 in good condition. If in fact this is a 4.4 that will be very interesting. I am inclined to doubt that this is a 4.4 however, the 4.4 was mated to a RWD transmission. Your car was born as a FWD car. While the 4.4 would mate with the FWD transmission the problem would be what PCM would be used to control them. Please take a photo of the engine for us.

The cost to move a 4.4 liter supercharged engine into a 1993 and have no warning lights forever lit would be several times the cost of the car, and very possibly more expensive than simply buying an STS-V. The supercharged Northstar was first available for the 2006 model year and was for rear-wheel drive cars; a front-wheel drive configuration was never designed. Also, a transmission major rebuild is necessary for reliability with the supercharged engine. It's possible, but unlikely. An added aftermarket turbocharges is possible, though.

Logan has a post above that notes that your car is an export model and that there are important features inside that mark it as an STS, which will indeed have the 295 HP engine. The Northstar is a marvelous engine, and its existence revolutionized the automotive world over the next 10 years. It has dual overhead camshafts with aluminum block and heads, integrated computerized management of the engine and transmission, port-tuned digitally-controlled fuel injection, distributor-less computerized ignition controlled by the engine/transmission control computer, transmission torque converter lock-up on cruise above about 45 mph, computerized chassis stability control integrated with traction control and ABS, computer monitoring of the catalytic converter, and many other features that eventually became standard equipment or even legally required in late-model cars of all makes.

There is one simple way to verify which engine came with your car. Look at the VIN, which is visible through the windshield on the driver's side on the dashboard. It will be 1G6ET129xPUnnnnnn, where the 5th digit will be a 'T' for an ETC, and the 8th digit will be a '9' for the 295 hp Northstar engine. The six numerical digits at the end are the serial number of the car. The 'x' is a check digit computed from the rest of the VIN that is used as a check for a valid VIN. The engine code is the 8th digit, a '9' in the example.

If the car is a base Eldorado, the 5th digit will be a 'L' (perhaps an 'S' for an ESC). The 8th digit for other engines are 'Y' for the 270 hp Northstar and 'B' for a 4.9 liter pushrod engine rated at 200 hp, a great engine but no Northstar, and not used in the Eldorado in 1993.

  • 2 weeks later...

I want to thanks you all guys for your kindness and precious advice. However I am having a lot of problems buying this car so I think at the end of the day I will look away...

Italian burocracy does not allows me to sign this car as an "old car" (over 20 years old).

And that does mean I have to pay ALL the taxes old cars do not pay... I just can not afford them...
