Jesse Boyd Jr.
(September 22, 1924 - May 15, 2014)

Jesse Boyd, Jr., a wonderful man of faith, was welcomed into the arms of his loving Savior on Thursday, May 15. He was born on September 22, 1924 in Lecompte, Louisiana.

His parents were May and Jesse Boyd, Sr. (a veteran of WWI) from whom he inherited a strong work ethic, great faith, and strength.

Jesse graduated from Elmer High School in Elmer, Louisiana and in 1947 received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from LSU, where he resided in the dorm at Tiger Stadium.

Jesse served as a B-24 flight instructor during WWII. He remained an avid pilot throughout his life and instilled a passion for aviation in his family.

He founded Boyd Oil Company in 1947 in Glenmora, Louisiana and was an Exxon distributor for 67 years.

Jesse and his wife, Edna Mae, also had a successful car dealership for 49 years located in Oakdale; Boyd-Buick-Cadillac-Chevrolet-Pontiac-Olds-GMC, Inc.

Jesse married Edna Mae Morris on September 4, 1955. They moved to Oakdale in 1956 where they reared their three children, Carter, Dan and Lisa Jane.

During his life, Jesse served on the board of many organizations including the Louisiana Automobile Dealers Association, Louisiana Oil Marketers Association, Louisiana College, Rapides General Hospital, First Federal Savings and Loan, Allen State Bank and First Guaranty Bank.

He was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Oakdale where he served as a deacon for over 50 years.

He was a founding member of the Oakdale Rotary Club and the Oakdale Chamber of Commerce.

In 1988, Jesse was appointed by the governor to the Louisiana Motor Vehicle Commission, a position he held for 9 years.

He will be remembered as a generous businessman who helped many families throughout Allen and Rapides Parishes.

Jesse was preceded in death by his parents, May Smith and Jesse Boyd, Sr. and by his brother-in-law, Wilber S. Hoyt.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Edna Mae of Oakdale; son, Carter and wife Bernadette of Shreveport; son, Dan of Oakdale; daughter Lisa Jane and husband Steve Johnson of Sherman, Texas; sister, Madelyn B. Hoyt of Lafayette.

He is also survived by 3 grandchildren: Joey, Charlie, and Lucia Boyd; 3 nephews: Max, Fred and Ted Hoyt and their families; and a host of caring friends and neighbors.

The family would like to say a special thank you to Dr. Pat Savoy and the caring nurses and staff at the Oakdale Community Hospital.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 25th, 3:00 P.M. at the First Baptist Church of Oakdale. Visitation with the family will follow the service in the Fellowship Hall.

My grandparents bought an 1987 Cadillac Brougham from Mr. Boyd. It was black with a red leather interior. My grandpa enjoyed being kidded about looking like a mobster. My grandma drove it until she died in 2004.
