Onstar - Towing

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know anything about this towing that is provided by Cadillac Customer Care via Onstar? I've had to use it 4 times in the last 4 months and they send a wrecker every time. The car has 117k on it.

If your vehicle is diabled OnStar can provide towing to the nearest Dealership within 20 miles, but will be reviewed on a case by case basis. Is that what you are asking?

good question. That reminds me, I have a on-star question also. Does it work on 2001? I didnt know if the 2000 back didnt work anymore or if it was 2001 back. When I push the on-star button on my 01 eldo it says it is enabled and status is good. has remaining credits. Never had it functioning before so I dont really know anything about it.

End Hijack

I just spent a few seconds looking through the pages at http://onstar.com and got a little information to add.

If your car is within drivetrain warranty, roadside service including a jump start, a gallon of gas, a tire change or repair, or a two to the nearest dealer up to 20 miles, is covered. Outside drivetrain warranty, there may be a charge. Services are currently contracted to Allstate, so if you have auto insurance with Allstate that covers towing, you can check with them. If not, check with the auto insurance that you do have for towing coverage. Courtesy beyond that is possible but not guaranteed, as Texas Jim says.

I had a dead battery outside drivetrain warranty in 2002 or so and OnStar offered to call the AAA for me and tell them where I was using the GPS location. That was a long time ago and current policies may be different, but this is typical of the "extra mile" that OnStar people will go to make sure that you are taken care of if you call. What I did do is go back into the K-Mart and got a side terminal battery cable wrench and cleaning kit, cleaned by battery cables, and my car was OK.

Well, the Caddy is well out of the drive train warranty. I've had it towed three times in the past four months for break-downs and winched out of a ditch once. Two of those three tows were to my house. No one ever stated that this was a courtesy. The first time the car broke down I hit the onstar to see if they'd call a wrecker for me. They did and paid for it.

Jeff,

If I am understand correctly and correct me if I am wrong... you had it towed three times and Onstar paid for ONE of the tows and you paid for the other two.

I just got off of the phone with a nice lady at Onstar and she connected me to Liz at GM Roadside.

Liz at GM Roadside said that as long as the distance was less than 45 miles there should not have been any charge to YOU.

the car can be towed to a dealer or to your house... it doesn't matter.

You should not have been charged for the tows.

She said to call Onstar from the car and that way all your info, dates, times etc ... would be available to the person that will help you file a reimbursement claim for what you were out of pocket.

No, all three tows were paid for by Cadillac.

I'm trying to find out the particulars of this service.

1) Where did this come from. Is the towing part of purchasing a Cadillac? Is it a benefit to subscribing to Onstar?

2) How long is this service provided to me? Is it for the duration of my Onstar subscription (indefinite)? Does this service cease at a specified age or mileage of the vehicle?

3) What all is provided with this service? What are the restraints (distance?)?

From my questions to them last night, my understanding is...

It is a benefit of having Onstar...

It lasts as long as you are an Onstar subscriber...

If you have a flat, they will come change it...

If you run out of fuel they will bring you fuel...

If your battery is down they will come and jump it for you...

The distance limit is 40 miles...

If you have an emergency push the RED button not the BLUE button and they will dispatch emergency responders...

Use the RED button even if you see SOMEONE ELSE with an emergency... they will still dispatch emergency responders...

You are covered anywhere in the US....

There was more but this is all I remember from my talk to them last night...

Thank you Jim. That makes it a little more appealing to keep subscribing to Onstar.

On top of all this, Onstar/Chevrolet Customer Care sent a wrecker out a few weeks ago to winch my Camaro out of a parking spot. Ugh...
