First Drive: The 2014 Cadillac ELR Is an expensive and sexy way to save fuel

It is almost impossible to have a conversation about plug-in hybrid cars without mentioning the groundbreaking Chevrolet Volt sedan, the proof of concept of homegrown technology and environmental innovation. The Volt, which debuted in tandem with recovery from economic downturn, was the cornerstone laid in an effort to reestablish General Motors’ position as a stable industry leader.

Some three years after the introduction of the Volt, with purchases of luxury goods leading a recovering economy, it seemed the right time for GM to introduce an indulgent version of the plug-in hybrid: the 2014 Cadillac ELR coupe, which was previewed by the brand’s 2009 Converj concept.
