caddyslew
I own a 2010 DTS with a White Diamond finish. I have a small scratch in the rear bumper. I went to the Cadillac dealer and ordered the touch up paint that matched my model. They used my VIN number to make sure I got the right match. When I put the touch up paint on it dries to a gray color. It appears to be white in the bottle. Does anyone here have experience with touch up paint? Is it possible the paint was mixed wrong by GM, Or am I just doing something wrong. The paint is in a small bottle applied with a nail polish like brush. The paint seems very thin. Any thoughts
Cadillac Jim
Try polishing it with a microfiber detailing cloth and polishing compound. -- Click Here for CaddyInfo page on "How To" Read Your OBD Codes-- Click Here for my personal page to download my OBD code list as an Excel file, plus other Cadillac data -- See my CaddyInfo car blogs: 2011 CTS-V, 1997 ETC Yes, I was Jims_97_ETC before I changed cars. KevinW
When the paint bottle is shaken back and forth, is there a rattle noise? There's a ball inside that helps to distribute the pigments and metallic particles; it must be shaken vigorously for several minutes prior to application. Another consideration is the touch-up paint may be formulated as a base-coat; after several layers of base have been built-up, a couple applications of clear-coat may be required to match the gloss of the surrounding paint. ___________________________________________________
caddyslew
Thanks for the replies. The paint bottle is just as you described it. I will consult with my auto body guy to see what he thinks. I thought I could do this one myself.
Cadillac Jim
The diamond white is a triple-coat paint job. You may need to compound the first coat and apply a clear coat over it. Any thoughts I have a Diamond White DTS and yes, due to some stone chips on my front bumper, I have some experience with touch up paint. Plain and simple, the stuff in the bottle you describe will never work. Not only does it not look right when first applied, after a couple years it will turn more of a biege or "yellow". The best use of this paint is for very small stone chips and use as little as possible. I have not used the "Doctor Paint Chip (?)" products that are now available, but they make some great claims. The videos shown on the web seem to show good results too, but they make a specific disclaimer for the Diamond White color. The best scratch repair for this color is spot repair with an air brush system. When I bought my previous Caddy, a 1999 STS in the same color, it had a mark on the rear bumper. The dealer agreed to have it repaired by a mobile shop they use for such things. The repair was VERY good and was only noticeable if (1) I knew where to look, and (2) had the light at a certain angle. The paint coat applied to the mark was rather thin and slightly transparent under certain light but it was an overall excellent repair. Remember, most plastic parts will tend to yellow this color paint anyway, so this touch up in a bottle may be even more susceptible to that. Never underestimate the amount of a persons greed.
