It sounds like the cooling fans aren't coming on. Pop the hood and tun on the A/C. Both of the fans should come on at low speed, even with a cold engine. If not, there is a fuse, relay, wiring, or fan problem.

You can probably tell for sure from the OBD codes. With the key on (engine may be running or off), press the A/C <Off> and <Pass Warmer> buttons together for several seconds, until all the dash lights come on like you just turned on the key, then release them both. The car's computer will then poll the car's modules and display the codes for each on on the DIC. They will be of the form

PCM P0480 CURRENT

where the first three letters are the module that threw the code, the code is a letter followed by four numbers, and then you have a label that tells you whether the code is CURRENT or HISTORY. Write them down and post them here.

Fans, also my first thought; also make sure you have no blockages (to the air path of the radiator) and check for leaves or other debris in the vanes and/or between the radiator and condenser.

Are you saying the temperature gage went back to the halfway point once you topped off the coolant?
