GM to push Cadillacs in China

Recommended Posts

"With a refreshed SRX and a locally produced XTS and the right powertrain, we really expect it to start to take hold," Mr. Socia said in an interview on Friday at GM's China headquarters on the outskirts of Shanghai. The SRX is a small sport-utility vehicle and the XTS is a full-size sedan.

Cadillac is one of eight brands GM sells in China, its largest single market for the past three years, with 2.8 million vehicle sales last year. One of its earlier models, the SLS, sold poorly because it had a V-8 engine, which is subject to tax penalties in China because of the engine size. Last year, Cadillac sold just 30,000 vehicles in China. GM said in January it planned to increase Cadillac sales to 100,000 by 2016.

Cadillac Targets Smaller Chinese Cities for Luxury Market Share

General Motors Co. (GM) plans to more than triple sales of its luxury Cadillac brand in China by 2015 by targeting affluent buyers in smaller cities as competition intensifies in the world’s largest auto market.

GM will introduce Cadillac’s global portfolio to China and add one locally produced model a year through 2016, according to Bob Socia, GM’s China head. The Detroit-based automaker plans to expand the number of dealerships for the brand in China to 200 this year, up from 70 outlets in 2011.

“At the moment, tier-one cities’ market is large but the market is getting saturated,” Kevin Chen, general director of the Cadillac division at Shanghai GM, said today in an interview at the Shanghai Auto Show. “But tier-two and tier-three, there’s high potential for growth.”

GM is going to push sales of the 50k xts in china. Hmm. Would be interesting to see what actual markup/premium they charge? In Sweden they charge 100% tax on foreign cars. I know most EC countries have had protection/tax clauses forever. But china is the land of cheap labor. You would think they could make a xts clone for 20k?
