Been looking at a -92 STS but have no experience from the 4,9. Are there any major problems on this engine like the HG on Northstar or had the 4,9 been thru all that in 1992? Does it need much fuel? Any other issue for -92 STS?

The 4.9 will not have the performance or the fuel economy that the Northstar has. That said, it is a decent powerplant and it does not have the head gasket issues that the Northstar has. It is imperative that the cooling system sealer be used in the 4.9 due to the wet sleeve cylinder design.

The fuel injectors on the 4.9 can be an issue but not the end of the world - just replace the injectors if they go bad.

Since the car is 21 years old, expect to have to clean ground connections, etc. - especially at the distributor.

I had a 4.9 in a '93 with no big issues and 200k miles. IMO easier to work on vs. the Northstar.

As for the '92 STS quirks...

1992 had a 1 year only rear suspension. '93 rears are completely different. Go figure..

No passenger side air bag.

Good chance the third brake light is a non functioning 'dummy' export version (Germany).

The very common 'service ride control' message can be easily removed thru some IPC settings (1992 only).

Thnx!

I did read about that rear suspension. Singel blade(!) when the -93 had all independent coil springs...... hmmm......

BTW: Did the -92 feature OBD-reader? Logan mentioned message and IPC-settings. What is basicly wrong and cause the message?

Gas/mile?

That single blade is also used on the 86 Corvette if I recall.

We have seen a few 92 PCMs go wacky. Make sure you keep using the cooling system supplement tablets.

Yes, the 92 has onboard diagnostics.

I consider the 4.9L very reliable. As I recall I got ~25+ mpg highway from my 4.9L 92 STS. Here was my summary page for that model: http://www.caddyinfo.com/92sts.htm

The old joke about the STS is the car should have been called the SRC due to the famous 'service ride control' message.

Very expensive electronic control struts typically are the issue. The car typically rides just fine if the system does malfunction. It's not 'if' the error message will appear..but when.

The 1992 model is unique in that some settings can be changed in the IPC to simply turn off the message. Maybe 5 minutes to change the IPC settings. In addition...I doubt if you can even find any of the correct electronic struts. Long discontinued..
