Recognizing the Current & Upcoming Cadillacs

Recommended Posts

With more models arriving it may be difficult to immediately recognize the new models. Here is a quick side-by-side comparison.

The XTS is a FWD or AWD cab-forward design mid-size.

The ATS is the new alpha-platform RWD, light and agile sport sedan.

The Current CTS is probably the most familiar, shown here in CTS-V form.

The SRX and Escalade are simple to recognize.

The upcoming ELR is a coupe and has a closed, jeweled grill:

And the upcoming 2014 Cadillac CTS re-design is on the extended alpha RWD / AWD platform:

Is xts motor transverse? Not sure how output shaft is aligned to reach rear on awd models. Does fwd and awd version share same layout and use basically the same trans?

One of the available features of the new Cadillac XTS, arriving in showrooms this summer, is the Haldex All-wheel drive system with electronically controlled limited slip differential.

The engine is transverse, yes. Both the FWD and AWD variants use 6-Speed Automatic Transmission, Electronically Controlled 6T70

A fwd car and rwd car will almost always have very different awd systems. I was going to say this and that but will look online for more drivetrain info

Ah-hah! Transverse engine with differential/transfer case in place of differential in transaxle, jointed drive shaft to accommodate off-center location of transfer case, conventional low-input hypoid differential in rear. Splined half-shafts with dual CV joints in rear. I can't tell from the photo whether the front uses a splined half-shaft or a thrust bearing, but you can see two CV joints, as with most FWD cars.

notice the north/south layout compared to the XTS? the CTS has a layout similar to a 4wd truck. the mercedes output shaft takeoff is much simpler on the awd sedans. not saying its better or worse. just seems a lot more compact on the mercs

joeb - I see a longitudinal engine versus a transverse engine layout in your pictures. Is that a Mercedes?

I thought that it was a Cadillac. That's why I asked. :)
