Jenny Webster
My speed sensor failed a few days ago. It still drove fine. Next time I drove it, it was fine for a while, then the same sensor error pops up. Next time, same thing... fine for a while THEN the error, but this time the car felt rough. Like it wasn't driving right. Yesterday, started out fine, half way into my driving (10-ish miles) error pops up again, and now I am getting some serious fight from my transmission, it felt like it didn't want to shift. I gave it a good punch of gas and just the rpms went up but the car barely went (not shifting) Also I have watched my avg mph drop from 15.5 yesterday down to 13 in the little while I was driving it. Is all this mess just from the sensor? Fix the sensor and all will be well? Or does it sound like something worse? I really don't have the money right now for the full work up and the caddy dealer. (They charge a ridiculous fee just to dx it). Any insight would be greatly appreciated. I am car illiteriate, so please talk to me like you would a 5 year old child Edit to add: I did run the error codes and found this: DTC P0503 Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) Circuit Intermittent So I guess it isn't as bad as I think? A new sensor should fix the problem?
Logan
I would replace the VSS sensor before doing anything. Maybe $25 part..fairly easy to change. Cadillac Jim
It sounds more like the connector to me. It's on top of the right half-shaft. You can reach it by turning the wheel all the way to the left and looking behind the right front wheel with a flashlight. You can lay beside the car and reach up and pull on the connector to see if it's loose. If it is, you might want to put the car on a service lift and clean up the connector and tighten its terminals. If that doesn't do it, change the VSS sensor; it's one bolt and about ten minutes. Some come with the connector and a pigtail, and if you get one of those use the new connector and splice it on to the wiring harness using weather-resistant splices. -- Click Here for CaddyInfo page on "How To" Read Your OBD Codes-- Click Here for my personal page to download my OBD code list as an Excel file, plus other Cadillac data -- See my CaddyInfo car blogs: 2011 CTS-V, 1997 ETC Yes, I was Jims_97_ETC before I changed cars. Jenny Webster
So... I kept taking it out on little trips... and yesterday it wouldn't shift... by the time I got in front of my parents house it dumped all the tranny fluid. *bangs head on wall*I turned a $20 problem into a huge problem. I never learn my lessons. I don't know what the damage is yet, having it towed into the shop today. <---this girl, is an idiot.
KHE
The transmission leaked all the fluid to the ground? That doesn't sound related to the speed sensor to me - it sounds like a cooler line leaked or some other leakpoint totally unreleated to the speed sensor.
