Frank Carbone
Hi All I've been hearing a humming noise while driving my 92 Seville SLS. The noise is constant at speeds above 20mph and is much more pronounced when slightly turning right. I thought drivers side wheel bearing but when I removed the tire and brake hardware the bearing seems good. I removed the other side and that bearing seemed good also, no noticable play or roughness when spining by hand. Well I ended up jucking both sides of the car and after removing the tires "drove" the car to a speed of about 60kph and I started hearing the "whirling noise" but it only seemed to be noticed when the car went into 3rd gear. Why is it that I hear it all the time while driving on the road (tested the car stuck in low and second and the noise was there) and quite noisy when making slight turns to the right at speed but when the car is up the whirl only happens when it shifts to high gear. I have a new wheel bearing but I don't want to change it if it's something else, ie a CV joint or ....gasp... the transmission. Any help and advice would be appreciated Thanks Frank Carbone
adallak
Frank, I had similar symptoms and removed the wheel to see the bearing. And it SEEMED to be just fine. Nevertheless, since I already bought a hub-bearing assembly I decided to replace LH front one. And it was the culprit. The job is easy and replacing a bearing on a 12 years-old car does not hurt and MOST LIKELY will cure the problem. Frank Carbone
Thanks adallak thanks for your input and I think I'll replace the unit anyway. I just hope that's the problem and it's not something bigger. Thanks again Frank
Frank Carbone
Well I installed the bearing and it was not a big job at all. It took roughly 1 hr but the noise is still there and the original bearing was fine. I'm kind of at a loss now as I dont think it's the bearing on the opposite side but I will put the one I have just taken out, knowing that it's fine, and try it on the passenger side and see if the noise is still there. What else can make a whirling noise while driving and make a kind of grating noise when turning right even slightly? Frank

Frank, See what maydog suggests. It may be another possibility. The saddest thing in life is wasted talent

Frank Carbone
Just to let you know. I installed the bearing on the right side and now the car is quiet once again. It seems that the weight transfer test is not accurate all of the time and I could swear that the grinding noise I heard turning right was coming from the left wheel. It's amazing how vibrations are transfered through-out the vehicle. I guess the best thing to do in future, although after 320K Km I dought i'll need to replace them again, the best thing to do is replace both units at the same time and leave the guess work out. Thanks again for the reply's Frank

Frank, In 90% of cases increasing noise while turning right points the left bearing. You were within those 10%. Good thing is your car is fine again, and it did not take much experimenting to have it fixed. The saddest thing in life is wasted talent
