ABS code 1285

Recommended Posts

I've recently purchased a '98 Seville STS, and have a couple of problem codes to try to eliminate. I initially had a "change brake pads" display, but with assistance from this forum, I was able to locate wiring for the front sensors, which had been cut from the sensor and tucked behind pipes on the front suspension. As a temp. fix, I joined the two wires together to eliminate the error display, and will order new sensors ASAP. That cleared the brake error display, but I still have another, that I suspect is brake related. It is a code of ABS 1285. I would appreciate any help with diagnosing the source of the error and fixing it. Thanks. Mike.

....but I still have another, that I suspect is brake related.

Why do you suspect it is brake related?

It is a code of ABS 1285.

Do you mean C1285?

Do you have a SERVICE STABILITY SYS message on the DIC?

C1285 Lateral Accelerometer Sensor Circuit Malfunction

This code is thrown from the EBTCM when there is a wiring problem to one of the accelerometers. It *will* throw ABS and stability system codes. It may throw traction control codes. The sensor is connected to the EBTCM, so it may be a bad connection in the EBTCM connector, and that is where I would look. The wire is BLU. Table:

P1285 Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor 3 Circuit

This is a wiring or sensor problem on the throttle body. It might throw an ABS code. I believe that the TPS sensor goes right to the PCM. I would look at the TPS sensor if the code is P1285.

Yes, I do have a "Service Stability System" message on the DIC together with the ABS1285. Does that narrow the problem down? I have no other codes. Thanks for the table Jims_97. I will look for the EBTCM connector tomorrow and go from there. Mike

Your C1285 code points directly at the lateral accelerometer sensor circuit.

Your lateral accelerometer is located under the rear seat bottom cushion on the LH side. See item #4 in the attached picture.

I would start there by checking the connector for oxidized contacts (use a contact cleaner to remove invisible oxidation) and/or wire harness damage. Given your experience with previous owner's short cuts in your brake pad wear system, there is no way to know what you might find.

Thanks JimD, you were spot on. I checked the wiring to the lateral accelerometer and found that the wires had been chewed through by (presumably) mice. There was a nest of material scraps just to the side of it. I trimmed the wires, re-soldered and plugged in. NO MORE ERRORS. Yippee!!!!! Thanks to all. Mike.
