how to fix hole underneath car?

Hey guys,

Last night when I took the car for a test drive the caliper overheated. I stopped and talked to my buddy on the phone, and he had me jack up the wheel to move it and do some tests. I was in a dark parking lot, trying to figure out what was going on while the wheel cooled down.

Long story short, I thought I had the mount point in the dark but didn't, and now there's a nice little hole underneath the car. You can stick your finger in it and feel the underside of the carpet.

The hole is probably 2 inches across, I'd guess.

What is recommended to fix something like this? I've seen my buddy do both fiberglass and bondo stuff, and I think I can go something similar. Plus it's on the underside of the car so no one will see it if I don't do the greatest job.

a customer at the parts store today suggested going to home depot for some spray foam stuff, but I'd like to learn the correct way to do this.

Thanks for the help :)

The spot repair should be a new piece of metal welded in place? The goals are strength, air tight, and water tight.

A quick and dirty workaround would be a metal patch "jb welded" in place?

Hi Bruce,

I do have some JB Weld. My first thought was maybe JBWeld a screen in place and either bondo or fiberglass over it?

how rusty is the underside?

Can you get a pic?

I didn't think it was very rusty, I will get a pic taken today.

I stick my little camera under the car and took a pic. The area where this is, is right by the door hinge area, but underneath the car. The door hinge area inside the car has some rust too that I'll be fixing this spring. The underside doesn't have a whole lot of rust but this area is the worst.

The stuff in the middle of the hole is the underside of the passenger floor carpet.

How do I fix something like that? Does it look like I need to cut out that section and weld a plate or something in there? I've never done any body work before so I'm not sure how to proceed.

The driver's side is better but has some rust in that same location.

I have a buddy that restores old 60's cars. I'll see if he could possibly help me with this.

Rockfangd is right. That was going to rust through before long whether you touched it or not. The only thing that will fix that is some major cutting and welding.

That's what I was afraid of. I'll see if my buddy can help me with this, he restores old cars for fun.

Thanks for the help guys :)

I talked to my buddy this morning, he's willing to help me out :) He said he'll have the 68 Barracuda together mid next week and can help me the weekend of the 31st.

I'll try to post pics of the repairs.

Thanks again for the assistance Bruce, rockfangd and Ranger :)

OK, so my buddy is willing to help but he usually restores like 68 Barracuda's and stuff. We don't know where to get this panel from.

Does anyone know where I can order body panels for my car?

You might try rockauto.com for panels. Sometimes they have them - you never know. If not, you might need to visit a junkyard and cut the panel out of a wrecked car.

Might be a polite way of the body man declining the work.

I would be very surprised to find a available stamping to patch that.

Plus..as much rust as there is...any good metal may be up to a foot away. That whole area is going to be weak..

Plus..it's a 22+ year old car...maybe a roofing tar patch?

I did check rockauto, they didn't appear to have anything or else I was looking in the wrong section. He suggested a junk yard also, I will try to get out and take a look this week.

I don't think he was trying to decline. He mentioned a panel would be easier, or else we could take some sheet metal and form our own panel but you'd be able to tell easily by looking under the car. I'd prefer to find a panel since it'd be easier and look nicer, but who's going to look under there?

I've seen the panels online, but the only Cadillac years I can find are 1978 and older. Was hoping someone would know a supplier :)

I think I'm taking the car up to him tomorrow afternoon for him to take a look at it.

Looks like I'll be taking the car over to my buddy's place in about an hour so he can check it out. I'll post back later tonight with his diagnosis and hopefully a few more pictures :)

Things are looking better than I thought :)

There's a small area underneath the car, on each side. The driver's side has an area like the photo I posted, but not as bad. The inside door hinge area has some rust on it, and I think that's pretty common. When I got the car there were some leaves in there that I cleared out, I can see how water could sit in there and cause rust. Also a little on the rear wheel wells. None of it is too bad, and he says it should be easy work. Looking forward to learning how to do some of this stuff.

My buddy has quite the collection of cars. There's a 68 Chevy pickup, a 68 Chevelle, two 68 Barracuda's, and a 1939 Packard that he's turning into a street rod. The street rod is just the shell, he's going to build it for "Back to the 50's" weekend in June. I offered to lend a hand, and I'm looking forward to helping and learning a thing or two :)

He's got to finish up one of the Barracuda's to clear out some room in the garage before we can start on my car, should be a couple weeks but he's willing to help me with it :)
