1689lbc
I was working on my radio for my 1997 Cadillac Deville, when suddenly my IPC went out completely. The only portion that works is the top, where the oil icon and check engine light is. Please tell me that there is a simpler way of fixing this problem other than replacing the entire IPC and having it reprogrammed via dealership. I checked the fuses and they are fine. HELP!! Cadillac Jim
There are three fuses in the trunk compartment fuse block, accessible from the trunk on the seat back on the driver's side by pulling back the trunk liner. The are the 20 Amp Cluster Fuse, the 10 Amp RLY IGN1 Fuse, and the 10 Amp IGN0-Body Fuse. First, check the light switch and make sure that the lights are off, and that the dimming adjustment is set to full brightness. If the slider switch is all the way to the left across the detent and the light switch is pulled out with the dimming turned all the way down, that can duplicate your symptoms. If the PRNDL light works, the IGN0-Body fuse is OK. If the car starts, the IPC is probably good and you are looking for something outside the IPM. Other checks are the trunk button and the fuel door button. Try turning on the key and, on the A/C console, pressing [OFF] and [PASS WARMER] together for about 5 seconds. When all the lights on the dash come on, release the buttons. The DIC should then scroll through the OBD tests and display the codes. Write them down and post them here. If the DIC is blank, or only some of the dash lights come on, write that down too. If you could tell us what you were doing with the radio, specifically, when the problem started, that would definitely help. -- Click Here for CaddyInfo page on "How To" Read Your OBD Codes-- Click Here for my personal page to download my OBD code list as an Excel file, plus other Cadillac data -- See my CaddyInfo car blogs: 2011 CTS-V, 1997 ETC Yes, I was Jims_97_ETC before I changed cars. winterset
just disconnect the negative battery terminal, and wait 10 seconds. Sometimes a good ipc reset is needed. - especailly when working on other componants.
1689lbc
jims_97 I tried the AC off and warmer combo and since the middle of the cluster is out (as are the temp, avg, instant) no codes were displayed. I noticed that the light on the inside of the hood is out as well. Do you think that could be related?
Cadillac Jim
I think you should try Winterset's fix first, since it's quick, easy and free, and because it's likely to fix your problem. Just disconnect the ground terminal of the battery for 60 seconds or more, perhaps a hand-wash and a cup of coffee, then put it back and see if all the problems go away. The hood light isn't related to the IPM to my knowledge. I would replace the bulb. Mine is out, too. -- Click Here for CaddyInfo page on "How To" Read Your OBD Codes-- Click Here for my personal page to download my OBD code list as an Excel file, plus other Cadillac data -- See my CaddyInfo car blogs: 2011 CTS-V, 1997 ETC Yes, I was Jims_97_ETC before I changed cars. rockfangd
note that the underhood light only works witth the headlight switch on. Why I dont know but they have been like that o caddies for as long as I can remember. Other than that they are noted for corroding where the bulb contacts. Cadillac Jim
How about the other checks on the IPM (fuses in the trunk, headlight slider and dimmer settings, PRNDL light, car still starts, trunk and fuel door buttons)? -- Click Here for CaddyInfo page on "How To" Read Your OBD Codes-- Click Here for my personal page to download my OBD code list as an Excel file, plus other Cadillac data -- See my CaddyInfo car blogs: 2011 CTS-V, 1997 ETC Yes, I was Jims_97_ETC before I changed cars. 1689lbc
Yes I checked every fuse in the trunk and all are fine. As far as the light and dimmer switch is concern, I'm not sure what you mean by that. Ive tried it but nothing happens. The PRNDL is out as well. The only portion that works is the.very top of the IPC where the emergency icon are located.
Cadillac Jim
By "nothing happens" do you mean that the car still starts and the trunk and filler cap buttons still work, or that they don't work and the car won't start? If the car won't start and the buttons don't work, the IPM is likely inoperative. I would start with the wiring harness, particularly the PPL wire (the network) connections; make sure that you didn't inadvertenly loosen any connectors under the dash. The connector to the radio is important. If you have an aftermarket radio, or a radio from another car, disconnect it and put the wiring back in the condition it was when you started the job, unhook the battery negative cable again, and do all the checks again if the dash lights are still out. I checked my 1997 FSM, page 8A-50-0 for the data link schematic and the only thing the radio amp in the rear of the car (if you have that kind of radio - Bose or Active Audio) is hooked to the RFA (fob receiver) module on the input and is the RSS if you have that, or a splice node labeled S324 that provides network information to the A/C, Radio in the dash, and the car phone if you have that or OnStar. The other side of the network connection from the in-dash radio goes to the MSM if you have memory seats or the SDM (air bag module) if you don't. Note that there is never a direct connection to the IPC or IPM. But, I have seen the entire car network go down if one of the PPL wires is grounded anywhere.
