Electric Starter turns 100

DETROIT – With the turn of a key or push of a button, starting a car today is taken for granted. But a century ago, the electric starter that debuted in the 1912 Cadillac Touring Edition helped establish Cadillac’s reputation as a test bed of technology and innovation.

Before the electric starter, it took a hand crank, a lot of muscle, and a bit of hope to start driving.

Another big one was the two-plane crankshaft in the 1924 V8. The cam went from eight lobes to sixteen, but the secondary vibration went away. The extra counterbalancing weights were compensated by lightening the flywheel. The firing order was the same as the SBC produced from 1955 through the early 1990's and many other V8's. Once that engine debuted, no other configuration, other than variations on firing order, was ever considered in a V8 design.
