ssplayboy2010
I have a misfire in cylinder 7 i changed plugs snd boots already how can i tell if it is the coil pack that is causing the misfire?
Ranger
If you changed the plug and boot, there is nothing left but the ignition cassette, assuming that the injector is working.

Logan
is there a way i can test the ignition cassette and injector b4 purchasing a new one FYI...unlike most other GM engines...#7 would be on the rear bank of a Northstar engine. How have you determined the misfire is #7? A GM Tech 2 has a misfire graph that makes it pretty clear which cylinder is misfiring. There is also a way to 'turn off' each fuel injector for 5-10 seconds for testing using a Tech 2. Lacking a Tech 2....you can try swapping the front and rear coil packs and see if the problem 'moves' with the coil pack. The front and rear coil packs are different colors (black vs. silver)..but are identical internally. I carry a spare one in my trunk. ssplayboy2010
i had the code pulled to determine that it was number 7, now i will try swapping the coil packs to see if that helps(weather permitting), i really appreciate the help being that i am a first time cadillac owner

We are just trying to see if the misfire (bad coil pack) problem moves to another cylinder with the coil pack. On that version of Northstar, there is only code PO300 to identify a engine misfire. There is no code PO301, PO302 etc. I'm not sure how they could detect #7 is the problem. There is no code PO307. There is a way...to pull up codes using the cluster..what code are you getting? ssplayboy2010
i took the car to auto zone and thats wat they told me when i had them pull the codes now i am very confused i didnt change all the boots just number 7 because they told me number 7 was the one misfiring but none of the boots looked bad when i changed the plugs i know that swapping the coil packs will only move the misfire so should i change all of the boots the car has 180000 miles how do u pull codes using the cluster
Ranger
Logan, I know the OBD won't go beyond P0300, but won't a Tech II give a P0301 - P0308?
Logan
Logan, I know the OBD won't go beyond P0300, but won't a Tech II give a P0301 - P0308? On the 2001 you only get PO300. You will never see a PO301-308. The misfire graph on the Tech 2 will show the cylinder number. I'm suspicious of the 'Auto Zone #7' code. There is a pretty easy way access the system codes thru the cluster.
