FrostyCadillac
I am in the process of replacing the bearings and found out that they are no longer available for this engine. GM issued a service bearing for the no. 1 position and no. 5 positions. The GM part no. 3545719 (k bearing, blue) is for the no. 1 and GM part no. 3545723 (k bearing, purple) is the no.5 position. Does anyone have a source for these bearings ? I have searched dealers far and wide already. It seems the no. 5 position bearings are still around, but finding the no. 1 is nearly impossible. Anyone know of an after market replacement source ? I appreciate any help locating these !
BodybyFisher
First off, its NOT a CAM knock that you are stating is NOTORIOUS. The knock that the 4.9 can have is the #1 main bearing knock, and there was a service bearing that was available to solve the problem, it has to do with the accessory serp belt and how it stresses the crank by pulling it upward causing a knock. Its a nuiscence knock and can usually be minimized by using a heavier oil, like 10W40. That knock is usually louder when the engine is hot and the oil thin. This knock does NOT involve the cam bearings at all UNLESS you are experiencing two knocks that are distinctly different. I have modified the title of your thread to remove the term notorious. Its a nuicense but does not affect operation of the engine. FrostyCadillac
You are right, I mistaken put camshaft and not crankshaft. Duh .. so easy to get them confused they are so close together. In any event, I am still looking for the main bearings if anyone knows a source. BodybyFisher
This video on the #1 main bearing knock to me does not really highlight the knock, just a lot of WIND, but he tried See www.rockauto.com that have main bearing sets for your 4.9. I looked up a 1994 Deville, that car has the 4.9, they sell standard, .25mm and .50mm undersize sets. I would also send www.gmotors.com an email with your vin number and see if they can help, they are good. If it were me, I would buy a standard set, install them, check the clearances with plastigage and use the correct bearing to attain the problem clearance, but maybe that is too scientific. Maybe some of our members who have rebuilt a few engines will chime in on purchasing the correct bearing set. Good Luck, keep us up to date on your progress. I couldn't help but comment on your statement that you get confused between the cam and crank bearings because they are so close together.
