joeb
might buy a 99 sls. 110k miles. almost new tires. no body nicks. has bad headgaskets. guy will take 500 for it. found another 99 eldo with bad headgaskets but guy wants 3k for it. am not sure on miles for eldo though. hard to find nice projects cars. sls guy says he gets occasional abs light but it comes and goes. has had car for 18months. clear title. no salvage. i know the eldo guy is probably crazy high price but as a money project, the sls sounds like the better deal. i will do work. Cadillac Jim
Tell the guy who wants 3K for his 99 Eldorado that you will pay that kind of money *after* he has the HG fixed and has a transferable warranty on the work. With a bad HD it's worth scrap price, or $500; offer him that if you like. If the guy who is selling the 99 STS wants only $500 up front, expect to get what you pay for. -- Click Here for CaddyInfo page on "How To" Read Your OBD Codes-- Click Here for my personal page to download my OBD code list as an Excel file, plus other Cadillac data -- See my CaddyInfo car blogs: 2011 CTS-V, 1997 ETC Yes, I was Jims_97_ETC before I changed cars. KHE
I agree with Jim on the guy with the Eldorado. No way is that car worth $3000.00... Kevin '93 Fleetwood Brougham '05 Deville '04 Deville 2013 Silverado Z71
lothos
joeb, while I was looking for cars here in Minneapolis I saw a white 1999 Eldorado for $700 that needed headgaskets. Not sure if it's still around, I haven't checked craigslist for a couple weeks now. WARNING: I'm a total car newbie, don't be surprised if I ask a stupid question! Just trying to learn. Ranger
found another 99 eldo with bad headgaskets but guy wants 3k for it. Must be a new listing and reality hasn't set in yet. It will in time and either he'll lower the price or mask the HG issue and stop disclosing it.
joeb
the sls is gold with a black conv top. bad power steering also. guy says its pump, not rack. but if i drop subframe i could always swap in a new rack. easy to do. has airbag message also. says abs light comes and goes. body was excellent. no bumper scrapes and doors look ok. all paint color seems even. hood is nice and flat, do dings. tires are 80% goodyears. no sunroof. alloys look good, no peeling clearcoat. engine looks very clean. except for the white underside of hood from blowing coolant. actually think it is worth 500. now, if my buddy will let me use his heated garage for a month. he bought it for 2500 and knows what the head job costs. seemed to be upfront. Cadillac Jim
I would diagnose the PS problem and fix it while it is still running. Likewise the airbag problem, which could be simple, could be expensive like an airbag replacement (which is likely to be more than $500) and might be a deal-breaker. Run the codes; they should tell what the airbag problem is and maybe the PS too. If there are no codes on either or both, this guy has been clearing them and you will need to go through a driving cycle (carry a couple of gallons of 50-50 and be ready to pull over and wait for a half-hour or more if and when necessary). Also, if the codes have been cleared or the battery has been out, you may need to see the air bag light before those codes show. -- Click Here for CaddyInfo page on "How To" Read Your OBD Codes-- Click Here for my personal page to download my OBD code list as an Excel file, plus other Cadillac data -- See my CaddyInfo car blogs: 2011 CTS-V, 1997 ETC Yes, I was Jims_97_ETC before I changed cars. joeb
the guy said his brother had a 92 seville w/4.9 but had sold it. he was unaware that northstar motors failed and was bummed to pay $$ to fix it. but he did have it for 18 months so he got some use out of it. its ironic that i can fix the heads and try and sell car but buyers will for the most part not pay a premium for a repaired car compared to a similar aged car with original headgaskets. i still think the car would be worth 3k repaired. Cadillac Jim
All motors fail. A recent repair isn't worth much without a warranty that the customer has some confidence in. An individual can't give a credible warranty, nor can most lots unless they are attached to an established dealership or other core business that can't easily weasel out of a written contract. You might look into a Timesert job form an outfit that has a transferable warranty. Their labor charges will eat up most of your profits but otherwise you have a parts car.
