tkjr
Need to replace water pump. Was just wondering if the removal tool has to be used or does it just make it easier. Also can the tool be homemade and,if so, with what?? THANKS
Ranger
Yes the tool has to be used. Here is a picture of one I made out of a 3" pipe, a piece of 1/8" steel plate for the back and a cut down 1/2" drive socket. http://www.geocities.com/grandolfo/ I sent a drawing with dimentions on it to someone and they posted it. You'll find it somewhere in the archives.

christophercon
It has to be used!!!!! I bought a LESLIE (I THINK) at auto barn for about $25. It worked like a charm.
tco43
There have been a number of posts from people who removed their Northstar water pump without the proper tool. In most cases they then had to replace the housing as well. Major mistake. Use the proper tool. It is available from NAPA for $21. Buy it. Good luck.
