The E 53 code is for the distributor signal. Check the wiring in the distributor to make sure it is not corroded at the connector plugs. There is a cam sensor on the distributor assembly - I can't recall if the distrubutor needs to be removed to access that but it is common for those contacts to become corroded also after 21+ years.

Thanks kevin the wiring looks good and everything inside the distributor is brand new....i was told by machanic the obd1 is not that accurate so he wants to checkother things...could it possibly be map sensor or o2 sensor without throwing a code?

If you have access to a service manual, I would start troubleshooting the E53 code. I don't buy the "OBD-1 is not accurate" answer from the mechanic...

Don't assume its the harness, it could be a bad computer/PCM/ECM,

The computer amy get hot - not a big deal. Get a factory service manual and start troubleshooting the E53 code and I am confident you'll solve the problem.

OBD1 is accurate. It may not be as sensitive as obd2 but it still senses the problem and identifies it.

I recommend inspecting the harness to the distributor. Look at the wires an plugs very closely
