Bruce Nunnally
Son2 called and asked what could cause the brake lights to stay on over night? This in his Mercury Mountaineer. The lights were on auto. No parking lights on. Looks like it was the brake switch, which is a mechanical switch on the brake pedal. I picked up a new switch and a new battery and drove to his university, which is an hour away. Threw in the new battery, observed the brake lights were in fact on. Vigorously jiggled the brake pedal and switch assembly, and now the brakes lights are only on if the brakes are engaged. We disconnected the battery for overnight as he has a dental visit tomorrow he needs to be sure to make. Then we'll monitor to see if the switch sticks again, and have the replacement installed, or it just needed that "adjustment" to be good for another 5 yrs. Further 'adjustment' is indicated, Bruce. Your description of events sounds like the brake lamp switch is being closed simply by the weight of the brake pedal. There will be some means of adjusting the position of that switch so a little more brake pedal travel is required to close the brake lamp circuit (and probably disengage cruise control). Remove whatever trim panels are in the way and get under there to figure out how to correct the switch position. I have no experience with Ford products since the 1960's, so I can't be more specific. You can do it!! Jim Drive your car. Use your cell phone. CHOOSE ONE !
