Oil

When I took the car to the dealer 1600 miles ago because of this low oil and low oil on the information center, They did a oil comsumption test and a LOF test, and found nothing wrong. Now,again, at about the same mileage of 1600 miles, the low oil came on the information center, and the oil level is about a quarter from the bottom of the hash mark.

Does the low oil on the information center come on about 2 quarts low?

Yes... that is exactly what it is designed to do.

Is the car always driven "GENTLY?"

If so... that could be the major reason it is using oil.

Over time, with gentle, low RPM driving...the rings will stick in the grooves of the pistons.

When they are stuck, they let more oil by them and into the combustion chanber, and increase your oil consumption.

Sometimes all that is needed is for the rings to be "EXERCISED" and unstick themselves from the ring grooves.

Several of us have already posted the procedure in previous posts.

I change my oil about every 7000 to 8000 miles or when the OLM gets to about 25 percent.... whichever comes first.

I NEVER HAVE TO ADD OIL BETWEEN CHANGES.

My car uses less than a half quart of oil between changes and one reason is.... I "DRIVE" it.

It regularly sees the upper area of the tach.

I now have over 106,000 miles on it and it runs great.

Thanks Texas Jim, I am going to bring it in to get reevaluated, see what they have to say, I'm going to start opening her up more, get the rpm going. like I said she runs fine, Just this oil thing thats bothering me. I'll have to start punching it on the highway. The car has 51,000 miles I'm the 2nd owner, First owner was an old couple who probally babied her.

Mine uses 1 to 1.5 quarts every 3000 miles. I also have 256,000 miles. Apparently these engines never wear out because you'd think I'd be using a lot more by now.

Someone here (sorry, can't remember who) recently posted a photo of a Northstar cylinder with 130K miles on it. The crosshatch pattern is still very visible. They are honed very aggressively, which helps explain, in part, how Northstars are designed to use oil.

There is no means of avoiding the final collapse of a boom brought about by credit expansion. The alternative is only whether the crisis should come sooner as the result of a voluntary abandonment of further credit expansion, or later as a final and total catastrophe of the currency system involved. - Ludwig von Mises

What is a LOF test?

Yea, well thats what the dealer gave me when this happen the first time, he told me to right down the mileage everytime I fueled up and check the level of oil. If it goes by what that GM sheet says, as far as what he gave me, then I'm definetly going through more then what I should be. GM sheet 1 Quart per 2000 miles.... My car 2 quarts every 1600 miles. Also, they changed the oil and filled it up to the top hash mark. I'll try keeping it in the middle. I made an appointment for tomorrow for them to reinspect. Should I go? Or just put a quart in the car and bring it up to halfway mark?

Sonds like the dealer is overfilling the crankcase?

Don't add oil - it will throw the oil useage study off - go to the dealer and have them inspect it.

That was me Warren. That is why the cylinders and rings never wear. In that respect oil usage is not a bad thing, but I have to admit, a qt in 800 miles is excessive.

Well guys, I took it to the dealer, and they told me that it was oil pressure switch, the one on the car supposely had a small hole in it. I hope thats it! Now when does the low oil on the information center come on at? 1 quart, 1.5 quarts, 2 quarts, cause he told me that it was only 3/4 of a quart low.

My oil life indicator goes to about 7000 miles but I personally think thats alittle to long. What do you all think I believe in 3000 miles every change.

Believe what you want. But 3,000 mile oil changes do not apply to modern engines and certainly not Northstars. You are throwing money out the window. I could bore you to death with the oil change history of my 206,xxx mile Seville.

The Oil Life Monitor technology is patended and it works.

Do you still replace spark plugs every 12,000 to 15,000 miles? Do you really miss breaker point ignition parts replacement?

Happy motoring....

The warning comes on at 2 qts low. Just about when the oil level falls off the tip of the dipstick.
