Too hot cat converter?

Today, after a 20 mile trip, when I got out of car I have noticed unusual heat wave coming from the driver side of the car. I touched all the rims, thinking the brakes could be dragging - nothing. There was no heat wave on the passenger side.

Later I realized that it could be driver side cat converter... I have recently replaced driver side AC Delco plugs with Iridium NGK and the original wires with AC Delco. I did notice the resistance of the new wire set was much higher that the old one...

Now, because I did only the driver side, I am curious if that replacement could cause rich condition and too hot cat converter... I do not feel any power loss. The car has dual exhaust and two cat converters.

I hate tune-ups! The car was fine, what the hell I decided to replace the plugs and wires! frown.gif

I have planned a 500 mile road trip. Is it safe to drive like that?

I would look at the cat in the dark when it is hot to see if it glows, maybe a leaky injector?

I would think that if the new plugs were not firing correctly you would feel it

It could be the plugs - who knows if the heat range of the NGK is equivalent to the AC-Delcos that were in there originally.

Catalytic converters get hot as part of their operation - it could be possible the wind was blowing in a direction you only noticed the heat from the driver's side?

If you have access to an infared thermometer, take the car on a similar drive and test the temperature of each converter. If there is something wrong, you'd notice a large temperature difference.

If you do notice a large temp. difference, try reinstalling the AC Delco's on the side that is giving the issue and see what the cat. temps are.

KHE,

I felt that heat wave twice in different locations. Definitely not a wind... I cannot see if it glows because it i snot dark enough. No IR thermometer at the moment. I have to live for NY and NJ in about two hours....

If it were ignition related, I would probably notice a difference. I am very sensitive to anything happening to the car.

Funny, I have done lots of unnecessary repairs on my 91 Seville and it was fine. Whatever preventive repair I do on the Fleetwood, it only gets worse! LOL

I'll do just that, Mike. Later tonight and will report the results. I agree, I would notice misfire.

I am curious if that extra resistance in new AC DElco wires put additional load on the coil and ICM... Looks like AC Delco switched to a cheaper vendor or something despite the price is still as high as before.

Does car have stock cats in stock locations? I am not up on lt1 cars.

Everything is stock. I think I have overreacted. i made a 200 mile trip with no problem. The driver side cat is easily accessible from under the hood. It did not look unusually hot.

So, KHE was probably right , some light breez created a heat wave I associated with a hot cat by mistake.

Glad to hear it, its good you are paying attention to the car's operation like I do (and my parents were good at it too), but sometimes you create problems, like I do with my heart.

Sometimes, I begin to feel my heart beat, sort of a palpitation, and I begin to pay attention to it, and it becomes a problem and chronic. I schedule an appointment with a cardiologist and he usually gives me a stress test and EKG, that usually costs a lot of money. During my last stress test, i was sweating profusely, in a full run, my heart was running 180 beats a minute and I said, there I felt it..... the Doctor was like, HUH?. He stops the tape runs it back and says, were you an athelete?, I said, yes, how did you know?, he said, sir, you just felt ONE aberrant beat out of 180 in full stride uphill on a treadmill! He looked at the nurse and they both began laughing, he said, your heart is perfect, stop worrying about it, he said you should see what a bad heart looks like, they go into arrest just walking fast!

All of a sudden my heart palpitations are magically CURED! This has happened the same way about 3 times over the last 30 years!

And it only costs $1000 in co-payments to find out that I am ok.....

And the moral of the story is, stay alert for your vehicle operation, but not overly alert!

Golden words, Mike! Sometimes I believe I am more concerned with my car's performance than my own health. :) Glad your heart passed all the tests with flying colors! LOL
