85ELDOCAB
I have an HT 4100 in decent shape except for corrosion on the block around the pistons. What is pitting aluminum? Can I get just a new block or how can I avoid this problem if I can find a rebuild. Any suggestions.

85ELDOCAB
I think coolant was leaking out of head gasket & was being burned. Engine over heated warped head. Mechanic won't guaranty repair without new block because of pitting around pistons.
Ranger
Around the pistons? Do you mean the cylinders? The cylinders on the 4100 (unlike the Northstar) are not cast in place and can be replaced.
navion
I believe that the 4100 can be easily replaced by a 4.5 or a 4.9. These engines are much better that the 4100 and are usually available used at a reasonable price. Britt

KHE
I believe that the 4100 can be easily replaced by a 4.5 or a 4.9. These engines are much better that the 4100 and are usually available used at a reasonable price. The 4.5 and 4.9 engines were all transverse mounted engines. The 85 Eldorado had a longitudnally mounted HT-4100 engine. Kevin '93 Fleetwood Brougham '05 Deville '04 Deville 2013 Silverado Z71
KHE
Can't the sleeves be honed? If not, they should be available new. Replace the o-rings at the top and bottom of the cylinders also. It is MANDATORY to use the cooling system sealer pellets on the 4.x engines. Most likely, your intake gasket was leaking, not the head gasket. The gaskets have been improved over the years and once your engine is repaired, it will outlast the rest of the car.
