1998 Eldorado

Recommended Posts

I have owned a 1995 Seville SLS for over 5 years, I enjoyed the car but had the famous cranckcase half oil leak and many A/C problems. With 127,000 miles, I am looking for a new car. I spotted a 1998 Eldorado with low miles (46,000). Is this basically the same engine or did Caddy do anything from 1995 to 1998 to avoid the oil leak issues ? I am interested in your input on the 98 Eldorado as it relates to reliability, Thanks for any input that you folks might have

Sometime during the mid 1990s...I believe with the 1996 model year...the case seal material was changed to a more effective seal, to lessen the possibility of a leak. My '97 with 137,000 miles is dry on the bottom. I wouldn't worry about a '98 model.

My 98 is dry, but I found out from the dealer that it had previously had the lower case half resealed...

I guess it's just a crapshoot as far as these things go...

One thing you can do is to take the VIN to a GM service center and ask them to run the check on the service history... You'll see all warranty work done on that car, and maybe it's entire history if the previous owner had his car serviced by GM...

I know of a 2000 STS and a 2001 STS that had the half case leak. However, as has been pointed out here many times, these leaks are so minimal that the oil doesn't reach the ground and can be ignored rather than repaired. Not enough of a problem to worry about according to several postings.

Well we will see, I bought the 98 Eldo ETC (46,200), trading in the 95 Seville SLS at 127,000. Major differences I like: heated seats, steering wheel controls for temp and radio, memory seat (if I ever sit down and figure it out), BOSE radio is awesome (incuding weather band), and when it snows front wheel drive. I think I'll miss 4 doors but the kids have their own cars now. To me at this point it is basically the same car at the 95 Seville only newer / better, I hope it serves me as well as that Seville which I drove 90,000 miles over 5.5 years.
