poopdeville
I am curious as to the widest 15" tire I can stuff into the fender of my '90 Sedan deVille. I have some really tired 205/60/15's now and want a wider patch. Does anyone have the magic formula for this car? I am concerned that a larger tire will rub on the strut assembly. Let me know your experiences on this matter. Thanks, MP
STS Scott
I have seen a deville of about the same year, with 235/55/R17's on it. whether they rubbed or not, I don't know, but I would assume you would be OK with about a 235mm tread. JasonA
MP, I think the key here is the size of your wheel. If you are going to stay with the factory wheel, which I assume is a steel wheel with wire wheel hubcap, I think you'll be limited to a 215/60/15 or something similar. I bet your wheel is only 6" wide. You could go with something a bit wider, like a 225/60/15, but that'd be on the outside I think. I had an old Cutlass with 14x6 wheels and 215/70 were perfect on that wheel. 225/60 was too wide and low, but 225/70 actually worked pretty good...but then I was getting pretty far outside of the stock height (which was a 205/70). What is the OE tire size for your Deville? 205/60 sounds too short. I'm thinking it was probably like a 205/75 or 195/75 or something like that? If we know the OE size, we can figure out which wider tires will work, and still maintain the factory speedometer calibration. poopdeville
Thanks for the feedback... The original size is as I listed there (205/70/15) and I have the aluminum 15" X 6" factory wheels. (5 X 115 bolt pattern, 70.3 CB, 12mm X 1.5 nuts, high offset) I was thinking of changing the factory ones to something a bit more radical (like 16" Grand Am 5-spokes) as there are many available with the same bolt pattern, high offset and centre bore and cost a whole lot less than aftermarket ones. I also have a chance at a set of 17's with 225X45X17 Pirellis on them but I am still trying to confirm the bolt pattern as they are not GM OE wheels. I may just drive to the guy and take my floor jack with me. The front wheels/tires are the critical ones for size and fit as the suspension is right there pretty close to the tires' inside wall. My earlier post about "considering a body mod" shows the car (but after my mod idea) if you wanted to check it out. Thanks again, Mike P
JasonA
Thanks Mike. Your original post says 205/60/15, and that seemed a bit short. 205/70/15 sounds correct. If you can get a 16x7 wheel, a 225/60/16 is a very popular tire size, and you'll have a HUGE tire selection at that size. That size will be very close in diamter to your current 205/70/15, so the speedometer error will be minimal. All the FWD Northstar Cadillacs use that wheel size, so they should be a direct fit for your car. You'll even have the Wreath and Crest logo on the wheels then! If you go to 17x7 or something, 225/55/17 is going to be the closest size to stock. A 225/45/17 is actually going to be a bit short I think. The miata.net tire calculator is a neat toy. Mike P I got a set of 17" 10 spoke tuner silver wheels cheap if your close & interested . I put them on w/out tires & didn't like glad I hadn't invested in tires too . poopdeville
Hey thanks for the feedback... Yup, goofed on the original post there and said 60 when it was 70... sorry 'bout that... confusion on my part. I would love your snazzy wheels there (the tuners) but I am up here in Canada, just north of Toronto and the delivery would kill me for sure. I checked out the 17's I found and they are unfortunately 5 X 112's and came off a CLK 430 and won't fit my girl properly. My hunt will continue I guess, for now. Just curious, anyone know a tire manufacturer that makes a whitewall in a larger size than a 70 series? I would keep the 15's and go with a 215/65 or 225/60 if I could keep the whites. I have seen a lot of sedans out there like mine with blackwalls and they just look awful, thus my quest for more wheel and less blackwall... hmmm... Thanks again all you fellow Caddie lovers. vansterdam
Try coker.com for some whitewall tires. Here's a better tire calculator that supports up to 5 sizes at once.
