strange electrical problem

Dear all members

Recently my car(1994 STS) has developed two strange electrical problems which are as follows:

1. None of the functions on my remote control works, which include closing/opening, interior lights and trunk. When I press the buttons the car doesn't do anything and I allways have to use the keys to open the doors or the trunk. I checked the remote control's battery and it was 1.3 volts which, I think, is ok.

2. When I start the car and put the gearshift on reverse or forward the locks don't do anything. Normally when you put the car in reverse or forward the central locking system must lock all four doors but this does not happen anymore in my car. Note that when I manually press on each door's central lock all four doors lock.

Can anyone please suggest a solution.

Thanks in advance.

Maybe this site will help with problem #1:

Good luck!

#1: Measuring the open circuit battery voltage is a VERY unreliable way to test any battery; its voltage must be measured under load to draw any meaningful conclusion. If your battery is over a year old, I'd suggest going to RatShack and getting a new CR2025 in any case.

My '95 service manual suggests opening the trunk and operating the remote within 2 inches from the receiver. If it then works, suspect a poor antenna connection at the receiver. Further, says the manual, reprogram both remotes before continuing with any troubleshooting.

#2: Assuming #1 and #2 are related, I'd attack #2 before worrying about #1.

The manual suggests a number of voltage and resistance measurements be made at the connector of the Keyless Entry Module; too long to detail here. (darn, I gotta get this manual on CD so I can cut/paste and post service manual pages like these). This leads me to suggest that you might pray for luck and remove/reseat the Keyless Entry Module connector.

Regards,

Warren

P.S. I typed "dam*" and the editor changed it to "darn." Pretty cool.

The alternative is only whether the crisis should come sooner as the result of a voluntary abandonment of further credit expansion, or later as a final and total catastrophe of the currency system involved. - Ludwig von Mises

What editor?

I referred to that automated online system thingy that intercepted my "unkind word" and substituted a more generic and acceptable word in its place without my intervention (DAM* vs darn).

On my 1996 STS both the automatic door locks and the remote keyless entry can be programmed through the driver information center. I don't have a 1994 shop manual, but someone here does and should chime in if this can be done.

Arash,

The battery should be 3 V. The remote operations antenna is integrated into the back light (by the license plate). Try there first.

Do you have 2 remotes? Does both remotes not work? You might try reprogramming them. You have to reprogram for 2 remotes even though you may only have one, if I remember right.
