norbi
Hi I am still new so i dont know if this is right page to ask for help but i own a 2002 Aurora with Northstar engine and i started having problem. When i drive a car up the hill or just floor the accelerator i smell exhaust fumes coming to my car, i went to the dealer and told me it was one of the seals but that didnt fix the problem and today went to my local mechanic and told me that it night be that one of the cylinders is not firing all the way when can is under load. Any suggestions andybody had a similar problem???
Ranger
You shouldn't be smelling any exhaust. The cabin intake is at the base of the windshield and your exhaust is at the back of the car. Check your exhaust system for leaks, starting at the manifold. norbi
I dont have any exhaust leaks and car is still too new to have them its only 2002 with 60k miles on it but mechanic told me that it comes from the engine itself not exhaust when cylinder doesnt fire up properly the fumes escape to the car inside. Ranger
mechanic told me that it comes from the engine itself not exhaust when cylinder doesnt fire up properly the fumes escape to the car inside. That makes no sense at all. Either you are misunderstanding what he is saying, he's not much of a mechanic or I am misunderstanding what you are saying. JasonA
Norbi, obviously the car isn't too new to have a problem, because you're smelling exhaust in the car. I don't understand your mechanic's logic here. Even if one cylinder was completely dead (like if you pulled the plug wire off the plug), there would be no odd smell in the car, unless there was an exhaust leak towards the front of the car (like an exhaust manifold gasket, or an exhaust donut gone bad). Can you further describe the "exhaust" smell? Does it smell like rotten eggs? This is normal in some instances, as this is the odor emitted from the catalytic converter (which is right under the car) under certain circumstances. Let us know some more details if you can. Did you actually get down and have a look under your car at the exhaust system or are you just implying that it's too new to have a leak? Because it could be brand new and have a leak. norbi
We checked under the car for leaks and didnt find any but what mechanic told me that car runs too rich when its under load and connected the scanner to it and scanner showed that O2 sensor is not giving a steady reading unlike the other one does so 1st he told me to change sparkplugs and see what happens and it smells like rotten egg with burned oil and it happens everytime i go fast and floor it or just go up the hill. Smell gets so bad i need to open windows for it to go away because its so strong. Iam really desperate to get rid of this smell because it gets so strong and annoying and have to drive like a grandma so i dont smell it.
Ranger
Maybe a leaky FPR or injector(s)? Either will cause a rich condition as well a rotten egg smell.
growe3
It sounds like the catalytic converter is bad. It can be checked at most good exhaust shops. You really shouldn't be getting this smell in the car, unless you are standing still with the engine running. If this smell is getting in, so are exhaust fumes, which are deadly. With a good running engine the exhaust fumes are almost oderless, but can kill you. The bad smell has given you a chance to fix a problem before it kills you. You need find and seal this leak. A common source is a poorly fitting trunk seal, another source could be holes in the firewall. -George Drive'em like you own 'em. - ....................04 DTS............................
