How much would you pay

umm... converting to rwd would be a royal PITA :)

but i'd probably spend 10k on it and use either the new northstar with a turbo or s/c or a ls6 or something along those lines. I'd go with a manual if I could. Hell, I'd put a manual in my FWD if GM made a tranny that would work :)

Well for those of us that dont have $65K lol Yeah im doing my research and looking into independent rear suspensions/AWD systems. Its gonna take some field work and go out and crawl under cars at the dealerships, but nothing I'm not used to.

I'm into this swap about $4500. I'm working with a local hotrod builder that will do anything out of the ordinary so he dug my project. He's been working on hotrods for over 20 years. Has and can do anything you can dream up. If we have enough interest this is the new market I'd like to get into it. He was on the welding assembly lines for GM 10 years before I was born. Hes a welding professional.

I will spend more time on this and start some solid research. Right now this is an idea ive been kicking around while doing my project. I've found the custom hydrolic place, the custom throttle cable place... stuff that i cant do or dont have equiptment for yet.

Let me know what you think....

Oh and I'm a GM guy I'd rather not adapt DSM AWD stuff into a Caddy

parts ideas...

96-99 Northstar

00-Present Northstar

LT1

LS1

SBC

BBC

AWD from Buick SUV

AWD from Caddy SUV

rear axel from any year Corvette

rear axel from XJ5 (inboard braking)

Just need brave guinee pigs :D

Actually its a GTP :) hence the name..... but yeah its gonna be awesome... its a 98 motor used with 70ishK miles on it. 02 trans from camaro SS with 5K on it... so newer used parts.

I'm $4500 into it. I got another $1500 to go though. cosmetics mostly, paint and color coordinating scheme for the shows to follow.

I wouldn't pay a dime to make it RWD, personally. I like it because it's FWD. It's easy to drive in the snow. I've had RWD cars that I hated in the snow. If I wanted RWD, I'd get another vehicle, like a 6-speed GTO or Corvette. :)

As I project car, I think yours is going to be absolutely awesome. I can't wait to see it when it's done.

The 1970 Cadillac 500 engine had 400 HP @ 4400 RPM and 550 ft-lbs of torque at 3000 RPM. I would deduct 25 HP or so for the SAE net HP rating.

The '70 500 engines dyno at around 325hp/500tq on an engine dyno when freshly rebuilt to stock specs. The factory claims are pretty reasonable for a "gross" HP claim, except for the fact that the stock valvetrain starts to float at 4200rpm. Expect about 250whp/425wtq on a chassis dyno.

With shaft mounted rockers, intake, carb, headers, and a street/strip cam, they put out 550hp @ 5500rpm and 600tq at around 4k. Subtract for drivetrain loss and that's around 450whp/500wtq.

Custom GTP,

You might be crazy! But that's the kind of people I like! Your car is looking sweet. Don't listen to these FWD is better guys... they just don't get it! FWD is for daily drivers... You are marching to a different tune!

I wouldn't change over a Caddy to rear wheel drive, I'd just get a CTS-V instead.

But for a project I would lean toward an all aluminum, big inch Chevy small block with one of those new twin turbo kits from Banks Engineering. Kind of a poor mans, do-it-your-selfer, Ligenfelter bad boy.

I really like your car so far... look stock and haul *smurf*! Pro touring cars are sure all the rage right now! I'd love a 1969 camaro with a twin turbo small block, 6-speed, and all stock looking outside. Factory Cortez Silver, no stripes, no hide-away headlights and some steel 17" wheels with the little cop center caps.... OHHHH YYYEAAAHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The 500 Caddy is a really good motor. It's actually lighter and smaller in dimension than a big block chevy! I would term it a "sleeper" motor. Put it in a malibu classic wagon or some like vehicle and go and embarass kids in their dad's mustang, camaro, etc.

If you are interested in learning more you should check out Maximum Torque Specialties web site. They build turnkey 500 Cad's with like 750 HP and 800 Ft Lbs of torque!

I would charge by the hour... cause in custom work anything can happen.. the other day this guy and I were front clipping a 50 ford and the owner ordered a front frame section that had it all set up drop the motor right in. WRONG they miswrote the owners manual and we ended up modifying his oil pan, which in turn added6 more hours onto the job. It also depends on the sump in the oil pan and where the measurements line up with the crossmember cause not only will the pan hit the crossmember it might also be right under the oil sump. I had to move mine 1.25" back for the fitment of mine. That would be a lovely car with a N* in it THATS FOR SURE!!

And in Milwaukee people are cheap so custom rates arent where they should be for the work done ($50-$60). Its half that
