giantdismoas
I love this forum, you guys are so helpful and i appreciate anyone who looks at my posts time.I was wondering whether anyone could help me out with the reconnection of the 4-6-8 cyclinder swicthing system that was on the 81's. I bought the car recently, with 100,000 running great with very few nonfunctional problems for 450!!!! The car rus great it just and little things im fixing ( I bought a new trunck mototr, some elctrical problems wiht the MPG, Climate control, and the radio, etc). And also, i did the diagnostic and it gave me the code 71, which is "Brake Light Switch" and they said it has to do wiht the release of cruise control by depressingf brake i think. If anyone could help me I'd very greatly appreciatre it. Thanks again in advace.
Ranger
That sounds like the switch at the top of the brake pedal. Either it's out of adjustment or needs to be replaced.
AtlantaMc
My mother had a 81 Fleetwood Broughm De Elegance, white with burgundy crushed velour(?) interior, wire wheels with spinners, my favorite car of all time if you couldn't tell by now... Anyway, it had the four six eight and my father hated it; loved the car though! The problem with the configuration was four and eight ran great, but six was off. they would fine tune six, and four and eight would then run a little rough. You really could feel the difference as the cylinders changed back and forth. Everyone else in the neighborhood that had one, was having the same experience. I remember my father having a wire/cable cut that ran to the transmission, as that I believe, is what controled how many cylinders were needed. Most of the people they new had the same thing done and were happy with the results. The cars just ran as an eight instead of the four six eight. Hope this helped... And, give you an idea why some people had the system bypassed. Mark McDermott 79 Deville 84,000 97 Deville 279,
giantdismoas
Thanks for taking the time to respond. It sounds like such a cool feature so if its easy to connect-disconnect then i figures it was worth a try. And this car is a dream! And it was a dteal too. Thanks again. Ranger
I am sure it is easy to disconnect as it was vacuum controlled and solenoid operated as I recall. No PCM involded. Good idea but way ahead of it's time. Under those tall valve covers is where you'll find the solenoids. Either the solenoids or the vacuum should be easy to circumvent. I am not very familiar with that engine. Perhaps Guru will chime in here.
KHE
There was an ECM on the old 8-6-4. The connections to the ECM were the achilles heel of the 8-6-4 system. Then maybe it wasn't vacuum controlled. Now I'm confused.
