tmpafford
Where can I find the caliper tool for the rear disk brakes on my 97 STS? Is it an auto parts store kind of thing, or do I have to go to the dealer to get it? I know I have to use the tool to "screw" the caliper piston in, but which way do I turn? I am going to guess that clockwise will turn it in and counter clockwise will spin it back out. Is this correct?

adallak
um.....what does that have to do with the tool I am looking for? BTW, good thing I bought the brake caliper piston CUBE tool to screw in the piston as needle nose pliers would have taken forever, never mind possibly cutting into that rubber piston boot. Had to screw it in atleast 15 turns. Well worth the expense! you perhaps did not read all post... tmpafford
You must have not read my question. Where can I get one. Which way do I turn the piston. Thank you for your help any way.
Cadillac STS
I used needle nose pliars slipped of a few times, but it got the job done

adallak
you can get the 'cube' from advance auto parts. The owners of 97 Seville will give you instructions on application. The saddest thing in life is wasted talent
davedog
I constructed my own "tool" for the job the other day. I used needle nose plyers, but I took some small vise-grips and clamped it down on the needle nose plyers so that they couldn't open, or slip....worked pretty good! on my 92 eldo, clockwise made it go in...kinda doubt they changed that...but who knows. Also, you have to make sure that when you stop turning it that it is lined up correctly, the manual will have a pic showing how it's supposed to be turned. tmpafford
...you have to make sure that when you stop turning it that it is lined up correctly, the manual will have a pic showing how it's supposed to be turned. Lined up with what? I was assuming that all I had to do was screw it in far enough to get new pads over the disk. Is this not correct?
Ranger
No, it is not correct. The face of the piston has two V shaped indentations 180 degrees apart for the nipples of the brake cube to engage. Those indentations also engage two nipples on the brake pad backing plate that are 180 degrees apart so the piston indentations must be in the 6 & 12 o'clock position for pad engagement. I hope I explained that clearly. I understood it
tmpafford
Yes, you make sense. I will keep that in mind. I will be doing the rear pads this weekend, if I can find the tool.
epricedright
I just did my brakes last week. For my 94 Deville, the indentations on the caliper needed to be aligned at 3 and 9 o'clock. The one nipple on the backing plate was at 9 o'clock. Your car may be different though. You will see the the nipple and the indentations when you take your brakes apart. It's important they line up. Hope that helps.
