chazglenn3
Should I attempt to change the cover seal first and hope that fixes it, or should I just go ahead and replace the cover seal and the water pump. The car has 104K on it now and I have no idea if the pump has ever been changed. The puddle is on the garage floor on the driver's side right under the thermostat housing. Ranger
Get a small mirror like a dental mirror and inspect the area behind the pump housing. It is tight and difficult but you will be able to tell if the leak is coming from the pump seal or the cover seal. It is much easier if you remove the air box first. No need to replace an $80+ pump if it is a $10 cover seal.
chazglenn3
Is there a need to remove the belt cover and belt, or just use the mirror to look around. Also, are you saying to look at the bottom of the housing? I am in the house (of course) and not in a position to look under the hood Thanks for the help, Larry! Ranger
No, you don't need to remove the belt cover or belt. Just look around and see if you can tell if it is leaking from the cover or the shaft seal.
