I Lost Overdrive....with traces of smoke

I was travelling about 70mph when trans started free spinning(revving)out of gear. When I shifted down to 3rd it ran fine there. I can start out w/trans in overdrive but once it shifts past 3rd it's like being in neutral.

Also, continuous barely noticeable traces of smoke started rising up around the steering column.

Yor car is going into "limp mode"(second gear) to save the tranny from any damage. It sounds like a shift solenoid problem. Check the diagnostic codes by hitting the "off" and "warmer" buttons on the climate control, then watch and write down the codes that appear in the message center. Shift Solenoids are not too hard to change, they are under the bottom pan on the tranny. They come as a kit for about $50.00. Labor by the dealer is about $250-$300. I had mine done at a local tranny shop familiar with Caddies for $70 labor. The dealer and the shops will probably scare you and say you need a total rebuild but check the codes and it will tell you what needs fixed. Go to the old caddyinfo FAQ's for more info on diagnostic codes. Good Luck.

it's a known and transmission unrelated phenomena. check the archives. some grease is burning out, there is nothing to worry about.

Adallac,

Are you confusing this with the steering column smoke? I don't recall hearing about smoke from the trans.

RANGER, he did not mention transmission directly. Can the smoke originated in transmission rise around the steering column?

No, I would not expect smoke from the trans area to rise around the column. I just reread his post. You are correct about the unrelated common phenomena. I misunderstood (or misread) his post. Sorry for the confusion.
