In the Market for a Cadillac

I am currently looking at a 1993 Seville SLS 4.9 V8, blue on blue. It only has 62K on the clock, has a softball side dent in one of the rear quarters and the fuel gauge always reads Full. This was the guys mom's car, all maintenance was done at the local dealer, very well maintained. Actually got the electronic struts replaced recently too. He wants $5200 for it because that is blue book with those low miles. What should I offer, I have seen even newer STS's with average miles and maintenance go for less?

Also, if y'all could recommend which year was the most reliable and the best buy I would appreciate it! Thanks so much in advance. I have always wanted one and this is a good opprtunity in my life to do so.

You are right... that's high for that car, especially with body damage.

I paid under $5k for my 94 STS in perfect mechanical and physical condition.

Granted, mine had 94K on the clock, but with these motors, you're generally good to go for at least 150K...

I'd say to offer him $4K, and if that doesn't fly, keep looking for an STS instead.

Marty, I do think that $5200 is high for that particular car. Have no fear though, you'll find the Seville you want. If you are particularly looking for an SLS, you'll probably find those a bit cheaper than the STS. If you don't like the plastic body cladding of the STS, the SLS is a fantastic car.

Thanks for the info! I have always wanted one. I dont know why they are not more popular, must have been the historic GM reliability? Seems these particular Caddies are pretty solid. I like them becuase they are big, get decent mileage, have plenty of get up and go, and above all have lots and lots of character!

Thanks again, I hope to be an owner soon! :D

BTW Jadcock...... Go Hokies!

Yeah babe! Go Hokies!

I love my car because it rides like a traditional Cadillac should, but has the power to click off sub-15 second quarter miles. It's rare that you can find a vehicle that rides like a limo, but also has the power to run like the wind. It's usually either one or the other...but not both. ;)

the 4.9 is a great engine we've gotten over 160k and it's stillgoing strong. lots of low end torque so the car will launch, do burnouts---no traction control on our 94 deville. seems to get better gas milage the faster you drive it. fun.

Is the price he is asking the "dealer retail" book price or the "private party" seller book price.

If it is the dealer retail and the seller is not a dealer then he is probably way too high. A dealer may give you some warranty or help should something go wrong for 30-60 days. A dealer will take a trade in. A private party won't.

A dealer may have inspected the car and fixed some things for liability reasons if noting else. A dealer has expenses.

The private seller has probably done nothing except maybe a mediocre detail job.

I believe any car is worth only what someone is willing to pay. "Book" is a suggestion or starting point to negotiate, kind of like sticker price on new car.

Check the trade in value as well. That's what this guy will get if he trades it in on something else. I bet trade in is less than $3 grand.

I like Kelly Blue Book's website - kbb.com

Go to the dealer where the seller claims all the service was done and ask if they will run the printout on the car outlining what they did and when. Hopefully they will help since they wish to get you a customer. Take the VIN with you. I bet the seller has not done that.

Maybe it was "dealer maintained" but how often and what needs to be done now.

Maybe do a carfax or ask the seller to do it, that way he pays for it.

I have a 93 Seville 4.9 w/ 108K and it has been a good car. A slight problem right now but hey that's what happens sometimes. I just my bought my second Seville, a 96 STS.

I'ld figure out what it is worth to me and make an offer. Part of te fun of buying a car is the negotiation for me. If he says "no" to your offer say 'no thanks" and walk away. If it is a fair offer I bet the guy won't let you get away. This guy wants to move the car. It is in his way and he wants the cash. Otherwise he would take the sweet thing and drive it.

Good Luck.

Sounds a little high to me. I got the deal of the century on my '92 Seville(well, I think I did). mine had 126,000, no rust...good runner and paid $1900. That was 2 years ago and it still runs great with 155,000. Good Luck

  • 1 month later...

Thats a little much I would say also I got my 94 STS for 2800 dollars with 103,500 miles on it, just a few minor scratches and a few little places where the paint was starting to go, but I got the bubbling sanded and refinished for 400 dollars now it's rust free with only minor scratches and rock chips but the interior is in perfect shape.

Happy hunting
