joeb
my 96 STS has about 90k miles. i changed the plugs and wires in jan. due to a miss at idle. last month the miss came back. i replaced the wires again and the car seemed to run ok. now in the last few days the miss is back. it runs like crap at first and than settles down after about 30sec. no codes. the egr did stick last spring. i got an egr pintle out of range error. i cleaned the egr valve and it ran fine. one strange note though. all of the injector wires are wrapped in elec. tape. it looks like someone tried to chase a gremlin down at one time. i have had the car for 4 years and it has always run fine. how about intake manifold leak? growe3
Check you coolant. If it starts going down you may be at the start of a head gasket failure. If the coolant is dropping, you may be able to slow it down by adding two tubes of Bars Leak Gold Seal, at the radiator hose. My experience is that this slows the leakage(if this is the problem), but ultimately the gaskets will need to be replaced. -George Drive'em like you own 'em. - ....................04 DTS............................ joeb
all the plugs are identical. would a coolant leak point to one or more plugs? i have dexcool. i heard that dexcool had less corrosion issues than green coolant. why did changing the wires fix the miss right away? i think playing with the ignition parts seems to make the miss come and go. A bad ignition wire will cause you FITS! Hard starting in damp weather, missing, bucking, rough idle! You probably have found your problem! I was going to suggest the ignition wires! The center electrodes burn out, the connectors get loose, and the insulation fails and cause a weaker or no spark to fire the plugs. In addition, a breakdown of the insulation causes cross talk and grounding to any metal they contact also weakening the spark. If you look closely you will notice where they touched metal there will be a burn mark. If you still have the old wires and you have an OHM meter, measure the resistance of each wire and record it by writing it down. I am sure one or two will be WAY out of range of the others, those wires were causing your problem, Mike
joeb
the wires i put on last jan. were ac/delco. i took them off to return them for credit and put the old ac/delco wires on for a few days. it seemed to run the same with the old wires. i than put the brand new ac/delco wires on and the miss was gone. for a week that is. now the miss is back. 2 sets of bad new wires? i don't think so. 8yr old car. 90k miles. things wear out. sticky valve. stuck ring. its no spring chicken you know. Hmm, it may be related to moisture and dampness, fill a spray bottle with water and spritz your coil pack area and the wires in total darkness while the car is running and look for arching. I have a 96 that runs perfect, age has nothing to do with it unless you have a mechanical problem.
