Bentham
It turned out my fan wasn't working, causing the car to overheat. :\ Anyway, they hardwired a toggle switch to correct the problem. So, what next? The guy already had my car from 10 - 2 and ran the bill up so he didn't want to do anymore 'diagnosing'. So, this is a temporary fix. How do I get the fan to kick on automatically? *The thermostat was also replaced. All I know is that it works now Eric 93 Cad Seville 100K 95 Chev Blazer 143K [garaged summers]

All I know is that it works now the fan did not spin as fast as now because you shot down the engine, went out of the car, openned the hood and... looked at the fan which at the time was aboiut to stop... do not trust too much to whatever mechanics say The saddest thing in life is wasted talent
jschunke
JC Whitney has thermostat switches that you can rig up yourself.
Dloch
Did you check the fuse and the fan relay? Dennis
Bentham
I *think he checked it. But I never saw him go in the trunk to check the fuse box in there. I only saw him go under the hood to check the fuses. What I don't understand is.... Before the work was done - After starting the car up, the cars temp would stay at a low temp, say 86 degrees. After 2 minutes of driving the coolant temp would SHOOT up within a minute to 255 then read 'coolant level HOT' and start producing 'smoke' from the left side. So, I figured, the thermostat was stuck closed ? ---Take it to the shop, I tell them to change the thermostat they do that, and claim it still isn't working. They rig some switch up to turn the fan on because it's ''not working'' and charge me almost $300. ---Now, when I leave the fan OFF via the switch, the temp doesn't climb suddenly, it climbs like it should after 5-6 mins. in park it is up around 234 -However, the fan does NOT turn on. So, did I have two seperate problems. The thermostat AND the cooling fan? -Eric Eric 93 Cad Seville 100K 95 Chev Blazer 143K [garaged summers]

DID IT HAPPEN WHEN YOUR RADIATOR HOSE WAS OFF? The saddest thing in life is wasted talent
Bentham
Nope, when I opened the hood I noticed the upper radiator hose was off, and I put it back on and tightened the clamp. today, before taking it to a different shop[the guy never got to it, it was there since Thursday] I added coolant to the 'FULL COLD' mark and drove away. It shot up to 'coolant level HOT' so I pulled into the another garage about a block away from where I had left the previous one. Are you sure it is full? Check it out when it is cold enough to safely SLOWLY open the cap. The overflow may be missleading. Bentham
No, only into the overflow resevoir. However, when I took it into the shop they 'purged' the system and filled it. Everything is working OK now, but without turning the fans on manually, its not overheating at all when I'm driving [temp right around 200.] And in park, it took a good 10 mins. to get up to 234 [without the fan switch ON] However, my fan did NOT kick on when it reached 225 + I'm just confused. Before I took it to the shop, it overheated in a minute. I bring it into the shop and they say it's because my fan doesn't come on. But it doesn't overheat like it did before. It was fine and dandy while I drove it with the fan OFF. -Eric Eric 93 Cad Seville 100K 95 Chev Blazer 143K [garaged summers]
