Brake Pads

At 80,400 miles, my DIC says "Change brake pads". Actually, I'm surprised that they've lasted this long. THe larger brakes on the 1998's up seem to have worked wonders. The brakes on my 93 STS were changed about every 40 k miles. Anybody else had similar experience?

Dasher,

I have the same feature on my '99, however, I would strongly recommed not to ignore the warning for too long. When mine came on I thought, OK next week is payday I'll take the car in then. Well, I found out that the rear sensors had already been worn through! Of course, these are a Dealer-only part and they were getting $30 each for them. Maybe mine weren't adjusted to come on as early as they should, but I certainly didn't expect them to fry that fast.

Eldoman: The brake sensors were added with the 1998 model.

Motor City Rick: My "Change Brake Pads" signal came on last night and I'm having new brake pads at the dealer at 2:00 p.m. If that isn't soon enough, somethings wrong here.

I don't do any repairs on my car and my motto is:

If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

If it is broke, get it fixed before the sunsets and

Never let anybody touch it but the dealer.

(The dealer might not do it any better than somebody else; but he's

more sueable - if that's a word.

The wear sensors are nothing special. They are included in the $47.00 set of Bendix Titanium pads available from Advance Auto Parts. They are actually a little "U" shaped peice of wire that is imbedded in a small chunk of plastic. The chunk of plastic fits neatly into a little notch in the top of each inboard pad. When the pads wear through down to the wires and the wires touch the rotors, the code is set. The warning then appears on the DIC. $30.00 for a set of "wear indicators" and them being billed as "dealer only" may be the biggest dealer ripoff I have heard yet (unless that's the installed price). Of course Caddy gets about $125.00 for a set of front pads for a 1999 STS, so maybe this is only the second biggest ripoff.

I put the Bendix pads on my STS several months ago. Did NOT turn the rotors. Not a squeek or rumble or pedal pulsation, EVER from them. You should have a little expierience with using a soldering gun and shrink tubing to make a good watertight connection of the wires when the sensors are replaced.

Never underestimate the amount of a persons greed.

Johnny,

I believe that is true for the front pads, my problem was with the rears.

Can you tell me which Bendix pads these are? Did you have pulsation before replacing the old pads? I read somewhere that GM had a pulsation problem with their rotors because there was no chrome in the alloy(=rust)...supposedly been corrected...Bendix is also an OEM supplier and possibly makes the factory Cad pads.

I've had great luck using OEM pads on other cars (luck to me defined as no pulsation) and I'm trying to figure out if this is because of the pad material, the rotor alloy, or both or? before I buy for the Cad.

My STS still has the stuff on it (don't know what) that the dealer put on when I purchased it 3 years ago certified pre-owned---and they pulsate BIG time. Yes, I drive the car hard but...so what?

BTW I've been thinking of trading up too...the certified warranty runs out around Christmas...and I read with interest your post on the topic. What have you decided? We have the same car.
