coolant temperature

Anyone know how to read the temperature guage in degrees. My 97 STS has an analog guage, the needle stays pretty much dead centre.

Can I get my info centre to give me a reading in actual degrees?

Thanks in advance.

Ted, check it out:

It's not available by default, but you can program the car to display the coolant temp. You'll notice that the gauge is not indicative (exactly) of the coolant temperature. As the gauge reads straight up, the coolant temp can vary from 190*F to about 220*F. This is by design, so there is nothing to worry about when you see it happening.

Good luck!

:D Thanks for the instructions, Jason. I've printed them off, and will set it up in the morning.

I've power flushed the system and added pellets, but it would be nice to precisely moniter coolant temp considering the damage caused by heat and aluminum engines.

Just don't panic if you see temperatures of 225 or even 235 degrees in heavy traffic - That's pretty common and it won't hurt the engine. ;)

As far as I know, you cannot do this to a '98+ car. Also, the overrides will probably be different for a 1996 vehicle. You can still program it so show the coolant temp, but someone with a '96 manual will have to post the exact procedure, because some of the numbers might be different.

:D The programming took just a few minutes and works perfectly. I drove the car for perhaps 20 miles, and let it idle extensively. The temp reading fluctuated between 195f and 206f :D Cool!

You can use the 97 instructions on a 96 with no changes , i programed my 96 SLS with the instructions for a 97 , and they worked perfectly on my car. Now the water temp is a part of the dic info.

Hey, thanks for that clarification! I didn't know if they'd be the same or not, but I guess they are!

I don't think this feature is available for 1998+ cars. Especially the Seville platform. Not sure on the Eldorado/Deville.
