Power Antenna Repair Kit

Ranger

Recommended Posts

I noticed today that my antenna won't go down. I pulled the mast and sure enough the cable is broken. I have heard others say that there is a kit available from the dealer for less that $5. I called Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick and Pontiac dealers and none have the kit. One said it is a PITA and doesn't work. They just replace the whole thing. One said the kit was available but no longer is and they replace with a universal antenna that will require modifying the plug and mounts <_ anyone done this recently and know if where it is available>

Since you just did it maybe you can answer another question. Acording to the manual it appears that the cable screws to the end of the mast. I can see where the cable is crimped to a metal collar and I assume that would unscrew just like the finnel (knob) on the other end, but it will not budge. How did you do it? Perhaps it was loctited (the manual does mention a drop of loctite on the replacement thread) and needs some heat?

I just replaced mine MONDAY of this week, the kit is no longer available , but if you will have the parts dept. do a search like mine did , they probably can locate one on another dealers shelf.ALL GM dealers to the best of my knowledge have this capability. They have gotten discontinued items for me before from all over the USA. ANOTHER dealer out of state is where mine came from.It is not 5.oo it is more like 68.00, The kit comes with new mast , so do not take your old one out yet, you will recieve complete instructions in the new kit. They are easy to follow. If you are luckey enough to get new one, when it comes in check and make sure the plastic return cord does not have teath on it for a gear dirven unit, yours should be a smooth plastic cable with a metal hook on the end . THE HOOK will hook into the spool in the motor. I drilled out the rivets on the motor to seperate it so i could lithium grease the drive gear and the spool, then replaced rivets with small nuts and bolts. The instructions do not mention motor seperation , but to me this was easier AND more thorough than their way. IF you have more questions i will be pleased to answer any that i can.

Franey,

Thanks for the reply. Yes mine is the smooth cable. I have already removed the mast and the broken part of the cable with the hook on it. I replaced the mast so the radio will still work and left it unpluged. Wow, $68 for a piece of nylon cable. When they get ya by the balls they really squeeze don't they.

I keep running this through my mind trying to figure out how to make a replacement cable. Ahh, there I go again, trying to reinvent the wheel. If only I can get a piece of nylon cable that size.

OK guys,

They may not be available from GM for $68 anymore but I found this on ebay. $46 + $5 shipping. 1 yr. warranty and 100% satisfatction guarantee.

I also found a company selling an entire new motor and mast (after market) for $30 but I am a bit leary. I think I'll go with the repair kit and keep my Delco motor.

Larry if I get some free time and it isn't too cold outside I'll have a look at mine and see how easy the removeable of mine will be. I have no use for mine any more so I would just give it to you.... motor and all. But at the moment the mast tip is keeping the rain and debris from entering the mast hole. I'll see if i can find a plug for it. I probably won't be able to look at it until this mon-tues. If you're still interested remind me and i'll keep you posted.

My Park Ave. antenna cord broke a few years back and the dealer sold me part no. 22039349 was the nylon cord, top section of mast and metal clip. It was $12.00 at the dealer about 3-1/2 years ago. GMpartsdirect.com shows it on their website. The entire mast assembly (all three sections with the outer tube has been discontinued for 10 years or so.

Gger2,

Thanks for the kind offer but I ordered it this morning from "Antenna Masts R us"

Rek,

I thought about a weed wacker line but it seems too flexible and is of a smaller diameter. The problem would be crimping it to the threaded metal base at one end and the metal hook at the other.

KHE,

I am getting the impression that it is no longer available. At least I hope so. I would hate to think I am paying $50 for a part I could have gotten for $12. This one comes with an entire new mast (all 3 sections), a new plug (water seal) and the plastic tube that sets it into the fender.

Oh yeah, for anyone else that is going to do this repair and to answer my previous question, the cable does unscrew from the mast. The smallest section of the mast is threaded at both ends.

I replaced the broken plastic cord with a plastic coated steel braided cable. I carefully straightened out the "J" end and hand drilled out the inside. Did the same thing on the mast section. Epoxied in the braided steel cable. Reformed the "J" end and put it all back together. It been working fine for over a year.

I got the kit today, installed it and the antenna works like new. The kit looks like it was the same one the dealers used to sell because all the parts were exactly the same as what I took off the car. It comes with a new mast, cable, "instalation tool" (which is just a short tube that is needed to close the contact tabs on the mast as it is inserted), a packet of grease, a small tube of loctite for the mast to cable threads, a new cover for the motor and instructions that were copied right out of the service manual. I was impressed.
